I CANNOT ANYMORE. I SIMPLY CANNOT.
In all seriousness, how long have you been drawing? What ways have you found to be best for practice? I'm struggling really hard with anatomy/poses/things-other-than-your-typical-wolf. Any suggestions? ;-; *spams with arty questions*

XD WELL

For the first question:

I've been drawing as long as I can remember.. My mom was still in highschool when she had me, so she spend a lot of time doodling with me; she often drew horses as they were her favourite thing and to this day, can still sketch the very same horse head she used to. She taught me how to draw balloons on paper, so I drew them everywhere.. (walls, and paper both as well as tile on the kitchen. xD) Other than those memories, the other memories i have of drawing are in preschool, and I remember when I had gotten a digimon book I had found the wonders of tracing paper.. I used to trace agumon and gabumon SO MUCH that one day while I was at moms, I just drew up a Gabumon without even looking at the picture because I had remembered. (mom and dad lived different places, thus the book was at dads out of my reach) From there, I started drawing other things- not tracing, but looking at the original while sketching my own on a separate piece. (I think its called freehanding?) And it all just grew from there. I of course drew a ton even when I didn't have a book to ref off of. I would draw dragons and gryphons, Medabots and digimon. I drew a lot of cats too, hardly ever drew wolves/dogs as they are one of my least favourite animals. (I have a phobia of dogs.) I cant tell you when i started making up my own species; and quite honestly I can tell you that it started very early.. I've always had a vivid imagination.
I've always took pride in my art style.. For the longest time in my life, I went without a computer, or access to the internet in total.. It wasn't until 6th grade when I got into furcadia, and I didnt know about DA and art online till about 8th grade, so my art style was based on me and how I wanted it to look. Thats one of the things I focus on in my art is I develop and draw my own way; I edit and try things depending on what I think might look good. I don't like looking at tutorials or even seeing much of other people's artwork because I don't others techniques to seem to influence mine (not saying they do, but just saying in general; I dont want to already see it unless I've done that already if that makes sense?

That being said, however, I do know that for a lot of people out there it helps to learn from something and develop your style on top of that until you eventually branch into your own direction. Everyone starts somewhere and at their own pace. :3

Second question:
I used to have a lot of time to draw in highschool, and would doodle any second I got. A good thing with art is that with enough practice, you will get to where you want to be with your art style. My point being, is that if you have spare time and really want to improve on something, draw draw draw. Say you want to draw a wolf, and learn to draw them well. You can start by tracing one (however, people tend to freak at people on the internet when you do as Ive read before; but I say heck if its for practice it shouldnt be a problem so long as theres credit given.) You could also free hand it, look at a picture and to the side of it, attempt the same image and just do this a few times every day until you get it to how you feel it looks best or once youve reached your goal. Another thing you could do is say you're happy with how you draw ponies, and one day, decide to draw the hair differently and sort of like the look. Keep working on it and you eventually develop a new way to draw hair on your horse pictures. Thats what I do; I draw something how I like it and tweak it every time I draw again. So if I draw paws a certain way, I'll tweak it a bit each time I make more paws, trying to see what looks better in my mind and when i find one I really like, will focus on drawing paws in that same way.

As for anatomy, poses, and drawing other animals, its actually a very hard thing to break. (The getting used to other animal anatomy thing.)

I am gonna tell you something, that I'm very unsure if a lot of artists do. I do not ref. I will not look at an animal to see its anatomy; I will glance at a google image to see things like.. The way an eye of a goat looks (They have weird pupils) or to see how deer hooves look. Even to see how a horses legs bend or to see a vague picture of how an animal Ive never sseen before looks. (lets say its a badger, because I've never drawn one.) I will look at the picture of a badger, glance around it, and then hide the picture and draw how I think a badger would look. And most of the time, the anatomy looks decent enough. Its always a good thing to start your pictures the same every time. It will familiarize you with your art and make it more of a technique than random drawings. I start out with a circle for the head; some people start from the feet and work their way up. I had a friend who would start from the tail and work her way to the nose!
As for poses, I have issues with these sometimes; especially with art block. You can google things like sleeping kitty and find a cute pose you like (Even if you are drawing something like a dragon or gryphon, your just getting pose ideas so the animal doesnt matter!) Just get ideas from searching if you cant figure one off the top of your head. You can also think about what that character could be doing; maybe drinking from a water hole, or pouncing off a rock? Try to think of them as something moving and living' draw them as if they were living their lives. Do they sleep a lot? Do they swim? Would they climb rocks or run? Dynamic poses are hard to do too, but same thing applies to them too. Is always fun to try doing poses like upside down, or back views; trying not to make the character look as though its sitting/standing and staring at the viewer.

Getting into drawing other things than wolves/canines is hard for some; I know people who draw other animals but said animals have canine like structure to them still. Not saying its a bad thing! Anyways..If you want to break from it, start with something thats canine like. Take for instance a fennec fox and a wolf. Both are canines. Both are very different but have the same back and body structure (save for the BIG ears and eyes) You could draw a small "wolf" and then instead of drawing the ears and head the way you do with wolves, draw them bigger! Fennec ears are super big, and they have tiny faces and small noses, but big round eyes. You could also sketch a wolf and re-size areas of it to look like a fennec or other animal, just to mess around so you could get an idea of how a different animal would look in your style. Other things that help when you want to draw other things instead of canines, do a little reading about the skeletons or general appearance. Fun fact: Cats do not have collar bones! Cheetahs are the only type of big cats that cannot sheath their claws! These small facts can help when drawing these animals a lot. If you draw a cheetah with out claws, it will look kinda silly. (a lot of people do not draw them with claws, and its just so weird to me XD) And the collarbone thing with cats helps because this means they move their arms differently and can lay differently. (Also, some people draw arms of cats where the front part of the arms connect from the shoulder blade when in fact, the absence of a collarbone would mean that it wouldnt really be that visible. )

Also, another weird thing about me is I do not take critique at ALL. Its a big problem with me. I see it as this: I'm self developing. I will draw how I like, and not how anyone else likes. I will draw how I want, and not how random people want me to draw, or think I should draw. Ontop of some personal social issues which i wont get into here, it really makes me feel as though they are judging me and telling me they dont like the way i draw by saying I should change this or that. It's not their art to tell what to do with.

BUT THATS JUST ME. Im weird and I know almost 80 percent of the time they mean well, but i cant really hold my tongue when someone says something like that. I just let them know if I want critique, I will pay for a subscription and choose the "request critique" option. My art, my style, my rules.. (in no way am i a smug bitch! I am very rarely stern about anything but my art is one of the only reasons my family acknowledges me, and i pride myself on it because I know its one thing I can do well.

-- another thing to add; have confidence in your work! Have an "I think I can I think I can" thomas the train spirit. LOL Never say you can't draw something unless you try and if you honestly dont like the outcome or it doesnt look close to what you were trying to draw (Like.. lets say you tried to draw a platypus... and it looked like some weird pokemon bird thing.) Just keep trying and you will eventually get it right. If you love drawing adn REALLY want to achieve art goals you set for yourself, please never get up.. A lot of people I know ragequit their art and its a shame because 1) they had great potential and 2) Why quit something that makes you happy? So what if you cant draw a realistic human; if drawing the way you do is fun and makes you happy, go for it and stick with it. There are very few things in life that make one happy to deal with every day. :c

If you want help drawing something you could also consider asking for redlines from others. Granted, this means they will redline in their own style, but its a start to help developing artists get a better knack at anatomy if they are fresh with it still.

Im really sorry to spam you and if this was too long to read.. IM REALLYYYY FREAKING SORRY.
Heres a hint for you.. I ramble/explain in depth about EVERYTHING so thats why this reply is freakishly long.. ;;
Also, i was an over achiever in English. (however my hand is dying from typing and therefore I have been too lazy to fix grammar, grammar symbols, and sentence structure as well as capitalizing Is.. LOL I USUALLY CARE MORE BUT ASHDASFASF)

I do hope, though, that you find some use in this spam.
