Description I don't usually reference pop culture in my artwork, but when I do, it's not really something that needs a steampunk treatment.

Wow this is great!
I like that you've included the red and white things as if this is the inner workings of a pokeball!
I might use this as a reference image for describing a pokeball in my Nuzlocke, It's that awesome! Well done and keep up the good work.

Thanks! I updated it, just fyi. 2 minutes of modeling, but I think it improved the image quite a bit.

Oh! Did you add the red and white shell by the sides? Or am I just being completely unobservant?

I'm kind of wishing that there was a steampunk Pokemon game now!

I did add them. It was suggested by a friend of mine, and rather confirmed by another, that they were necessary.

Honestly, a friend who has been a lifelong Pokemon fan asked if it was a Pokeball. I always take that to mean I didn't do a very good job. Kind of like someone asking me if my picture of an eye was an eye. So I made it a tad more obvious.

I may add some bits sprawled out on the ground around it to suggest that it's the inner workings of the ball...but that's a later thing.

It was instantly a pokeball for me, but then I'd seen the title so I can't say 100% that I would have gotten it otherwise. But I think that with anything that's not a direct copy of something you take that risk, because it's more of an interpretation, so I wouldn't take it to mean that it was bad.

I am happy that you make so much steampunk themed work lately!

I can't say anything constructive though, since I don't use digital medium~

but I love it, and love the design!

Well, thank you all the same! I've actually been trying to get back to doing more steampunk stuff for a while.

Really, this is just more of a switch to digital based medium over the studio work I'd been doing for the last year or so. THe main reason being that I managed to screw up my fingers making my last studio piece, and I'd been meaning to go back to digital for a while.

Mostly, this is just a way for me to combine my genetics...a mother who is an artist that loves Victorian artwork, and a father who's an engineer and loves sci-fi. Also, this explains my f'ed up brain in so many ways.

I love steampunk art, it's part of the reason I watch you!

that's sounds like something a real artist would say "oh this? I f***ed it up while working on my latest piece"

how did you managed that, though?

and do you prefer digital media or traditional? I love your traditional pieces, they are well done

and that is a very interesting combination of parents @_@ sounds like it's never boring at your house !

I hope to be an artist mother too one day! X3

also, look what I found :

Actually, you'd be surprised how boring it gets. Both are into professions that involve long hours of not talking to anyone. I'm afraid the hermit gene got passed on to me as well! lol.

If you're asking if I like digital art or traditional art, my answer is "yes."

A less cryptic answer is that I have very little preference for one over the other. I've tried to develop the skills equally, but I think digital won out. It's just based on the fact that I was able to make higher quality works with a computer before my motor skills developed to a similar level which would have allowed better traditional pieces.

Plus, in case you hadn't noticed, I really get into extreme detail. Managing that in traditional art is fun and rewarding, but requires a lot more endurance. It's much easier to maintain precision and keep the detail level high in the digital field.

But everything still starts with a drawing.

As for the mucking up my fingers...I typically work in charcoal or graphite. With both, I get very used to using my fingers directly on the pieces. When I switched to pastel, I failed to realize it turned my medium into a very fine-grain sand paper. 40-50 hours of rubbing and blending, and I was able to rub the top layer of skin off no less than three of my fingertips. Since the piece was for a class, I couldn't stop...so after working for several more painful days with damaged skin, I appear to have caused a bit of nerve damage. So, I have to take a break from it for a while.

And cool pokeball emoticon! Is that one built into the system? Or is it just one premium members and beta-testers get to use?

hm, I didn't think about it that way!

so two cool parent = boring childhood?

that is really rare!

most people have a strong preference, or at least are a lot better in one medium then the other!

I love your concepts and ideas and works, but I still prefer the traditional pieces~

yes, I did notice. that is why I love your art and why I follow you... or part the reason!

I also like your attitude!

I hope I'll soon have the time to draw a lot too...

wow, that is what they call "sacrifice" for the sake of art!

but are your hands ok now?

Is it weird that I find it inspiring?

it's a regular DA emoticon! just needs some searching!

I think it all falls into the category of "eccentric."

Of course! If it wasn't fun, we wouldn't do it now, would we?

Opheliac-noire In reply to Sux2BeMe [2014-01-19 15:25:54 +0000 UTC]

actually, I have the theory that some people are just born with art in them,

If I don't have time to draw- I get depressed.

I don't even see myself not doing something artistic.

It's like a part of me, if that makes sense.

so I thinks it's fun to us because we are just like that,

sorry if that sounds weird

Sux2BeMe In reply to Opheliac-noire [2014-01-19 22:29:34 +0000 UTC]

There you go with the weird again. The only thing I think is genuinely weird is stuff like the people who think the American Tea Party is a good idea...basically, sticking to an idea in the face of conclusive and contradictory evidence. Not only do I think your idea isn't weird, or even eccentric, I think it's logical. Some people ARE born with artistic inclination. Some people are born with green eyes. There's not too much of a difference there.

What it sounds like you're suggesting is a difference between talent and skill. To that end, I had a long discussion/debate in the drawing studio where I went to school. The end result was the general opinion that it's the difference between nature and nurture. Talent implies the nature side of things...an inherent ability towards artistic ability. Skill suggests a focused effort on improving abilities.

That said, I try not to use the term "talented" as a compliment, since it minimizes the effort artists put into their work. I don't give anyone a hard time for doing it, though. To most people, it IS a compliment, and trying to correct them is kind of a dick thing to do. However, I try to point out an admiration for the amount of work artists put into their pieces. Talent is just implied whenever I compliment someone's work.

Without talent, skill has no real path to follow...just a set of formulas with no real drive behind them. Those who have talent often feel very much the same as you do. For a long time, I wasn't doing anything particularly artistic, and it was a very depressing time for me. So, I completely understand your point of view. It's a way of life, part of who we are as people, not just as artists.

It's like a piece of advice my father gave me when I was in school. He said the secret to finding the ideal career is to figure out something that you like so much, you'd do it for free...or even pay to do. Then, find someone willing to pay you to do it. The reason we study these things is so we can get better at it, and make the task of finding that person willing to pay us easier.

Sorry about the overly long response...sometimes I just get going and don't know where to stop.

I see what you mean. I do agree that there is a difference, I too think people never use the term "talent" correctly.

but let them be, right?

actually, lately I just thought about it a lot and my conclusion was that even if I never succeed in it (commercially),

I will never be able to live life without art - I even make food thinking about colors/composition!

I am not sure it's a good thing though...

and that is a good advice, too bad art is underestimated, and it's hard to make it...

because that is the dream job -

that way we can work and make art without compromising one for the other!

but it seems impossible.

such an optimist, aren't I?

and no, I enjoyed reading it! I just agree with you, so sorry for the relatively short reply!
