Description Update:Thanks everyone who helped me think of names for him! I chose a combination of ~EternalStarTrail 's suggestions!

This is my 2nd custom Breyer stablemate and like my first, also had many issues. The most disappointing being he fell off my shelf above my sink into a drain full of drying dishes, which of course has many hard and pointy things in it. So his beautiful face is ruined and he has a chip on one of his back hocks. So very sad because he was beautiful, I thought. Do you think I should just give him a white muzzle to cover the chip on his nose?

His color came out nice enough-but another problem I was having was once I put the Matte Finish on after the black pastel layers, it lightened the back some how and made it seem a dull black or grey instead of a nice lustrous black.

Would he be considered a liver chestnut? Maybe?

I still have issues with white markings too, they look rather sloppy and I need to figure out how to get them smooth looking. I was using layers, started out with a grey and then got lighter with each layer. But it's still not a nice even white. Bleh. O well, on to the next model! I'm thinking a blue roan? It will be on one like this: [link]

Also, while I'm here, another update. I'm still doing finishing touches around the house and new room so that explains my absence. For a few days there it looked like we just moved in! Crazy stuff. But it's slowly being put back together-but now I'm behind on laundry and very tired. Pictures of the new room coming soon!

Very nice, his coat came out beautiful. He could definitely be a liver chestnut, and maybe there's some sooty thrown in there too

So you just bought one of the ones that was already painted and re-painted it? I have always wanted to try something like that! Yours looks so awesome though, I could never do something as amazing as that! <3

Yeah, well it was an old model I had from when I was younger. You take the model, prime it, and use chalk pastels to brush the colors over it in layers. If you would like to read about it, here's a great tutorial: [link]

You should make a tutorial on some of these guys, I just bought a bunch of unpainted stablemates bases and I'd like to paint or pastel them nicely like this ^^

I will! Maybe though once I stop making mistakes with them. But for now, here's a few of the tutorials I looked at the help me get started: [link]

Pastels and acrylic paint for the white markings.

Oh, chalk. Scraped them into powdered and applied them in layers.

try doing your blaze/whites in chalk first then go ontop with a very fine brush with the paint and feather out the marking ontop of the chalk to get a more realistic edge. go look at some close ups of blazes and such... you can usually see the hairs "fanning out". might help.

did you just paint him? Or did you mold him as well?

sVa-BinaryStar In reply to SilverBB [2012-07-17 19:42:18 +0000 UTC]

Just painted-I don't mold or sculpt. He's a Breyer stablemate

I like him even more. I thought the chip on his nose was just a white marking on his lip.
He's so beautiful, and his texture looks a bit smoother than the other one. I love his markings too! Did you see the trick to doing roans and fleabitten greys?

KonaKinz In reply to sVa-BinaryStar [2012-07-17 18:01:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I heard of using a tooth brush, putting your color of acrylic on it, and snapping/flicking the bristols.

sVa-BinaryStar In reply to KonaKinz [2012-07-17 19:45:42 +0000 UTC]

Oooh I've done that with pottery before! Maybe I'll give it a try, it would have to be really fine though since it's another stablemate. Can't wait to see the next one you started!

cobra-farms [2012-07-17 17:11:53 +0000 UTC]

i think it looks awesome! are you using acrylics for the white? i've heard you have to water them down a lot and then just put layer after layer of VERY watery white paint (so no greys or anything, just white).

sVa-BinaryStar In reply to cobra-farms [2012-07-17 17:37:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah acrylics. Ok I will try that next time, even though I did have it fairly watered down, but will water down even more!
