Description FähnrichMaria Hubschmid (right) and Oberfähnrich Klara Burgmüller had been very close since their basic training,  although it was often very strict and rigid there and there was a lot of marching. At flying school, things were a little more cosy and the two of them
spent a lot of time together. As new pilots were urgently needed at the front, their air combat training was unfortunately somewhat shorter than planned.
But as young Leutnants, they also went to the front together and shared a "den". The other girls didn't want to disturb their happiness, after all, they were also reliable and brave soldiers.
They both won several air victories against the Allies, but often had to watch their comrades who were flying next to them being shot down and losing their young lives.
Then, on a very hot day in June, Klara fell in battle after an Englishman shot her down after
10 minutes of relentless chasing, Maria began more and more daring individual actions.
She, who had previously always looked out for Klara's safety and had never left her side like a guardian angel, not only had she herself been struck in the heart, but now she also blamed herself because she had failed to prevent Klara's fate. She was often reprimanded and admonished for her high-handedness.
Finally, one morning in July, she ran to the hangar at 6.30 a.m. in full combat gear, where the technicians were just starting to prepare the the machines. She wheedled the oldest member of the squad, who everyone called "Uncle Fritz", to get her plane ready immediately, refuel it and fit fresh ammunition belts.
"Uncle" Fritz knew how Maria had changed since Klara's death and put his right hand on her shoulder and with his left he stroked the little bit of cheek that peeked out of the tightly fastened pilot's cap.
"Oh, girl!" he said in a sad voice that wanted to comfort her and at the same time knew that it wouldn't help. And he guessed what she had in mind. But he obeyed Leutnant Hubschmid. At 6:55 she sat in her Fokker D.VII, waved, took off, wafted the ground troops a kiss and nobody on the base ever saw her again.
Two days later it became known that she had flown directly to the enemy base and attacked it with machine-gun fire. By her third round, the anti-aircraft guns were manned and waiting for her. Before she could start firing again she was shredded by two guns at the same time and was killed instantly. Her attack had not caused any real damage, but her pilotless aircraft crashed into a hangar, which was destroyed along with several Sopwith Pups. Two technicians also lost their lives. Currently there is nothing more to report.
