So I finally finished my submission for the Gallery Nucleus ATLA/LoK tribute show . The bummer is I think they were doing sort of a "rolling entry" thing where as people submitted stuff they were confirmed so even though the 'deadline' was the 20th there's already about 30+ artists confirmed as showing so it may have been a poor choice to work up until the deadline. We'll see; it's a juried show so who knows.

Lots of fun stuff and hard work on this one. I actually started work back in about September which was after Korra Book 3 had finished. I was planning on using the "metal clan" symbol predominantly but as Book 4 started it was clear that the symbol which had only been in minor background shots in Book 3 would be the symbol for Kuvira's army in Book 4. The result was something of a total tear-down.

Apart from the obvious stuff like the badger-moles and the winged boars I chose the flowers (which are a Camellia ) based on my own personal interpretation of the flower on Toph's dress from the original series. The animated design wasn't detailed enough to be specific so i had to just make a choice as I needed the specificity for my image. I felt that given that it would be native to the region in question and had appropriate botanical symbology it was a good choice. The top area features my Mucha-esque interpretation of the "seismic sense" ; admittedly this is one of those iconographies that makes sense if someone explains it to you but is far too abstract to see on your own. I'm sure there's a clearer way to show that idea but it's an interpretation of an abstract graphic representation (the banded black/white from the animation) into a completely different design language.

Toph is my favorite character from ATLA, although she's up against a very competitive cast. But her joining the team is where, in my opinion, the show reaches its full maturity.

The plan is to go through the entire Gaang to be another series similar to the "Four Seasons" series but addressing many of the things I learned or got feedback on in that process.
