Sokka is now officially a Maiko shipper. Even if he is...horribly drawn. AGAIN.Some spoilers for 314 and 315 ahead!
Seriously...that balloon scene was awesome. Sokka and Zuko having some alone time...talking about Zuko's choices in life...and then, inevitably, bringing it around to girlfriends.
"You didn't leave behind anyone you cared about?"
"Well, I did have a girlfriend...Mai."
"That gloomy girl who sighs a lot?"
"Yeah...."
Just...I was happy enough that he mentioned Mai in the first place, and especially after the "cared about" part. But the DELIGHT in Sokka's voice and the way he leans in with surprise is just....FANTASTIC. He's like, "OMG, no way, you got some of that?" And he describes her as "That gloomy girl who sighs a lot." He's completely NOT negative, he just hits her appearance squarely on the head.
And Zuko's like, "Yeah..." with that SMILE and that wistful, happy tone that says that he loves those traits. He is into girls who are gloomy and sigh a lot. At least, when they do it Mai-style.
And Sokka totally approves of that. And he understands Zuko's loss. And he IMMEDIATELY compares Mai to Yue and her moon spirit transformation.
"That's rough, buddy."
The conversation was made of win. Just...so natural, so effective, and it was GREAT to see that side of them.
And then, later on....Sokka was all, "Who's THAT???" and Zuko's, "That's Mai!" And you know that Sokka was then like, "WHOA??? You dated THAT pwnage machine??? SCORE!!!" And Suki promptly grabbed him by the ear and almost ripped it off.
You know that Sokka ships 'em now. His first reaction was enough....he approved COMPLETELY, didn't seem confused by it, and no doubt thought that they were a match made in heaven. Gloomy Girl and Angry Boy.
So, here's just...a little expression of my squeeage over this fact. Sokka is a Maiko shipper. And I'm sure Suki is, too....having seen what Mai did.
The characters all belong to Avatar: the Last Airbender.

but still we all know the idea of zutara actually coming true for sokka would be a nightmare.
by the way i love zuko and mai as individual characters and am not trying to diss on maiko. i actually like it better than zutara even though i dont ship.

And I love how you point out that Zuko likes those traits. 'Cause he obviously does. He thinks he's beautiful when she hates the world. Which she does pretty much all the time xD

I'm as much a fan of Maiko as I am of other couplings but only when it's not oversimplified/trivialized like it usually seems to be within the show :/
What I mean by that is some of the stuff in the show between them just makes me gag, like the "I don't hate you" bits, and to some extent, the "I love Zuko more than I fear you" (although that was PWNSOME XD). Their relationship, to me, doesn't need cliche/gushy lines like that and works better in silence and with significant glances.
But personality- and appearance-wise, I do think they make a great couple

Ah, but where else are you supposed to get cheesy lines like that?
They COULD have easily made Maiko this sweeping, epic, dark and mysterious relationship where she is trying to fathom the depths of his mind while revealing the extent of her devotion to him, or focused on the pain she felt when he was banished the first time, or shown how she supported him when his mom vanished...but they didn't. They chose, instead, to let those remain unspokenly obvious and focus instead on the more "real-life" relationship...mushy dates, ice cream donations, couch-cuddling, all that sort of stuff.
Where ELSE are you going to get a couple that can say "I love you" by saying "I don't hate you"? Where ELSE is the deep, troubled, angsty co-hero going to get to snicker like a loon and compliment his girlfriend on how beautiful she is when she complains about the sunset? I didn't really like the scene the first time around...now, though, it's just amazing. Because neither one of them is really Shakespeare...not every lover can use the poetry of Cyrano. Some are just dorks.
And "I love Zuko more than I fear you"...if that had come from ANY other girl (or person) in the show, it would have had so much less of an effect. But he fact that Mai, the emotionless princess of much severity and sarcasm, said "I love" about another person--the SECOND person in the show to do so (Aang having already chalked up two contributions to the roster), and I believe that she and the Avatar are the ONLY two to say a line along those lines (oh, wait...Ursa also says it about Azula, make it three)...that is where the power in the line comes from. It's a fantastic line, and really, a quip that should be by her picture in some sort of compilation (though I think one of her many, many delightful sarcastic remarks would be a good one..."Just take the bear," "Orange is such an awful color," "I don't hate you," "I'm bored," "I'm hungry," "You're so colorful, it's making me nauseous," "Ha-ha," "But don't ever--break up with me--again," "I look like a man" [okay, face it, THAT one would be the BEST QUOTE EVER to put by a picture of her]).
I was hoping for Maiko to be a more dramatic, serious portion of the show, but I'm now more than content to lap up the humor intended with it. XD

I understand why Maiko wasn't all angsty, and I'm pretty glad it wasn't
(Basically I would have liked a LOT more on Ursa and the aftermath of her leaving, past and present, period XD. But it's understandable that they didn't dabble in that issue too much. Bit much for a cartoon aimed at kids 
I wasn't saying I think they work better as a "sweeping, epic, dark" couple. Just, y'know. A little bit more serious of a relationship couldn't hurt 
And yes, that exchange is in TOTALLY character! For that reason, I don't completely dislike it; like you, I didn't really like it much at first. Now, I'm okay with it (I still don't LOVE it, though). It's much better than them saying "ILU! <3 <3" all of a sudden. It just made me cringe 'cause it seemed so sudden/random XD. Not because it wasn't expected, more like because they just slipped into their roles as a couple so quickly that it caught me off guard.(They sure got started on the makin' out part reaaalll fast
I agree, it IS a really powerful line. It's one of those lines that, in real life, no one would ever laugh at because it would be almost sacrilegious to do so. But, of course, trying to use them in TV or in books usually...doesn't work as well as intended XD. They just lose some poignancy and seem to be too much for the situation. I like her line a lot within context, but if I start thinking about it out of context I start giggling XD.
And dude, she has way too many funny/great lines to fit in one compilation XD.

Sokka and Maiko goes way better than Sokka and Zutara. I don't think the Zutarians ever considers that Zutara would end Avatar most hillarious (male/male) relationship.

Maiko Forever!!!!!! lol I just love that couple! Out of all the couples that will survive they will be the ones! She's the only girl on the planet that can put up with him. He's jealous, bad tempered, cranky and a couple of other things are wrong with him but she manages quite well to keep him in line. I mean if TyLee went out with him she be in tears in the first 5 minutes. Katara, well fire and water don't mix. I mean he's taking over the FireNation and would have to live there, she wouldn't want to live there. Wouldn't work out and plus Aang is so in love with her. Aang's heart would break.

You are totally right on that one. As far as I know from pretty much being 'one of the guys' all my life that's definite grounds of approval on Sokka's part. And besides, we all know he's 100 percent for guys dating girls who can kick their butts anyway...well, since he met Suki anyway.

My sister and I both LOVED the Zuko and Sokka bonding in Boiling Rock. Those two and Aang are so TOTALLY gonna all be BFFs someday. Which is perfectly fine by me, seeing as how I fangirl all three of them and adore the interaction they have together.
I still love that goofy grin + dreamy gaze off to the side Zuko does when remembering Mai. Rendered completely twitterpated by the mere description of her. He's such a dork.
I think your Mai is the best one on here. Zuko's head looks just a little weird and yeah, Sokka's not too great either. But the concept is hilarious and it made me smile so I approve of this deviation being in my favorites anyway.

They actually remind me a lot of Robin, Cyborg, and Beast Boy now... another trio of guys that I love seeing interact and pick on each other and have quality male bonding and stuff... 3.15 totally drove me over to Maiko. Cuz at first it was the alternative to Zutara... but now I'm totally rooting for it. Ok I have nothing against Zutara but Zutarians are the most crazy shippers ever!
