A rat rod is any car that's had more attention paid to making it drive as opposed to looking good.
Who ever said a rat has to have a nice paintjob, or an even body? Who said it even has to have a body? A seat, four wheels, an engine and tranny and something to steer with is all you really need.
It's not about looking good, it's about driving. You want something that looks good, build a trailer queen and spend umpteen thousands of dollars on something that will never be driven out of fear that a rock will scratch the chrome or a bird will poop on the hood and ruin the paintjob.
You want to make a car that you can drive every day and not worry about messing it, make it fast, loud and fun to drive, and don't want to spend a metric buttload of money, build a rat.
The ultimate goal of most rat builders is to make something from the ground up that they enjoy taking out for a drive, and doing it as cheaply as possible.
