Description

What makes a supervillain? Ever since superhumans first emerged in the mid-19th century, each country had used their own identification system to gauge whether a superhuman was a hero or a villain, usually based around their own country’s self-interests. During the world wars, each side labeled their own superhumans as heroes and their enemies’ as villains. Since the Allies won, the Central Powers/Axis superhumans would be remembered as villains for history, but there are many who would challenge that claim. Since the Cold War began, the US and USSR have been exerting their influence across the globe, encouraging other states to support their list of supervillains.

However, while most so-called “supervillains” couldn’t really be called that due to biases and prejudice from the accusing party, there was one particular group that had no problem fitting the description, or even embracing it. In ancient times, before the rise of modern civilizations, there were proto-superhumans who walked the Earth, and lorded over the masses. They were viewed as gods by normal men, worshipped and feared, and would later inspire the tales and legends we now view as fairy tales. But these people were very much real, and are very much still alive.

After the rise of civilization, these superhumans fell to the waysides as mortal men became kings and led armies to conquest. The once-dominant superhuman was rapidly outpaced by the spreading roots of civilization, and their hold on humanity faltered. Scores of mortal men, proto-superheroes, led an army to challenge their rule. A massive war engulfed the ancient world, spreading from prehistoric Europe to ancient China. Though they caused untold deaths, the villains were defeated. However, before their final blow could be dealt, they retreated to the Underworld to regroup, and gather their strength to take back what’s theirs. Human sorcerers placed a curse upon them; that they would not be able to reemerge for thousands of years, in the hopes that future technology could adequately match their power.

As time passed, stories of these villains grew into myths. Thousands of years later, they have reemerged, ready to take back what once was theirs. What they saw shook them to the core; an Earth, divided among two superpowers, where superhumans are controlled by humans once under the rule of those stronger. Though divided by ideology they are united in their one vision; the destruction of modern civilization and a return to ancient times, where might makes right and the strong lord over the weak. A time when superhumans were rightly feared as superior, inherently just in their lordship over humanity. This group not only pride themselves in being called supervillains, but revel in it, preparing humanity for the time when they will indeed have reason to call them supervillains. To fear them.

They are called the Order of Chaos, and are ready to bring the world to their knees. From left to right:

  • Black Throat, Lord of the Dead - Torvald Svarthals, a renowned archaeologist from Norway, was not an original member of the Order, but became possessed when he unearthed an ancient relic from before the Viking age. That relic was the Runesword, containing the essence of Svarte Alder, the Mad King, who once dominated northern Europe during the 3rd millennium BCE. With the sword, and under control by Alder, Black Throat has great strength and combat prowess, and can also command the corpses of those he slay. Svarte Alder believes the countries he once reigned, Scandinavia, have grown soft and weak, and wants to reestablish an empire of warriors, with strength and glory in eternal battle. Black Throat came into prominence in the late 70s, when he awakened a horde of under Viking berserkers and besieged northern Europe. The event brought an end to superhuman detente, and pushed superheroes to the forefront again, inadvertently creating his own enemy.

  • Ishtar, Queen of the Underworld - Once the lover and ally of famed ancient hero Gilgamesh, Inanna was betrayed in battle, and cast into the underworld. There she faced torment and pain, but managed to fight back, and ultimately rose to become the new Queen of the Underworld - Ishtar. As Queen of the Underworld, Ishtar had access to hordes of chimera demons that ravaged entire countries. Ishtar vowed revenge on her former lover Gilgamesh, and would not rest until he had been brought back underneath her feet. However, Gilgamesh and his allies cast a curse upon her, forcing her to remain in the Underworld for five thousand years. She finally reemerged in 1983 when she opened the Gates of Persepolis around the world, and hordes of demons ascended. However, Gilgamesh had also traveled through time, ready to defend his homeworld, and the two former lovers are locked in mortal battle again.

  • Varcolac, The King of Vampires. Vampires had long preyed on humans for sustenance, and in the ancient world, ruled entire kingdoms where humans were no more than cattle. But as technology improved, humans fought back, and hunted the vampires to hide in the shadows. Eventually, vampires split into two factions; the Houses and the Clans. The Houses sought to integrate with humans and live on animal’s blood, whereas the Clans wanted to regain their dominance. Varcolac sees the Vampire Houses as weak and traitorous, and seeks to establish the Kingdom of Vampyria, the nation of vampires, like the kingdoms of old. Possessing great strength and intelligence, Varcolac is one of the most dangerous supervillains, who can give even the strongest superhumans a run for their money.

  • Shihuangdi, The First Emperor of China. Using sorcery, Qin Shi Huang turned his own army into obedient zombies of stone and clay - the Terracotta Army. Shihuangdi fought against the immortal rulers of ancient China, the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, and eventually established the first unified Chinese dynasty. Later in life, he feared death, and sought the elixir of life, which would grant him immortality. Fearing an immortal ruler, his own son usurped his rule and entombed him for eternity, sealing away him and his Terracotta Army. Thousands of years later, his tomb was disturbed by Chinese archaeologists, and he reemerged, shaken to see what the country he founded had turned into. He reawakened his Terracotta Army, and will not rest until China has been brought back under his fold.

  • Armaggeddon, Progenitor of the Apocalypse. It is hard to describe the entity known as Armaggeddon. In ancient times, she was a mortal woman, enamored by nature. But as mankind spread, so did their rule over nature. Animals who were once apex predators were turned to meat, clothing, decorations. Entire lands were transformed into farmland and city-states for humans to rule. This woman sought to aid the forces of nature, and the natural spirits repaid her in kind. She became an immortalized guardian of nature, but only for as long as nature persisted. Through human expansion and climate change, she transformed from a being of nature to one of rock, soot and ash. A walking catastrophe. Wherever she goes, destruction ensues. Though her attempts have been foiled in the past, one can only wonder if she truly is the bringer of the apocalypse.
