Description
In an old deep forest growing in a ravine the new moon’s night is coming. When the thin and sharp crescent hangs above tree tops the wood starts filling with pale green glow, sounds of tiny bells arise here and there running all together into one calm melody and on the edge of the forest a tall shadow appears. It is slowly moving down a wide path, which was beaten there by some wild creatures, towards a meadow in the heart of the forest where a wellspring with hot water gushes out from the earth and tea bushes growing around. With each new step the formless shadow begins to take on substance and shape and in the dull light of giant mushrooms and blinking fireflies you can notice some details of its appearance: it has something in common with a human women and a black fox with several tails, hidden under patterned kimono. It is a one of spirits which are known as Kitsune in Japanese folklore, shapeshifters who can take shapes of a fox and an attractive women at will. Every hundred years a new tail starts growing on Kitsune’s body, so if you count its tails you can approximately say how old the creature is.
When Midnight Kitsune arrives to the meadow, she takes a teabord and a few special pots out of one old tree’s hollow, carefully tears off some fresh leaves and herbs and starts a tea ceremony which lasts until the dawn. Some forest creatures join the ceremony from time to time to drink some tee, have a conversation or just rest in silence. And, though humans are usually not welcome in these wild places, if you ever find yourself on the border of such a meadow that night don’t be afraid of join such a weird company, it might be one of the most interesting moments of your life.
