It was a weapon created by an alien race during a war. It absorbs and manipulated mass, and eventually was imprisoned on the alien world that the story is set. The radiation on the planet held it prisoner, but eventually it was released and got inside the body of a Transformer, whose body protected it and allowed it to grow. It possessed the Transformers and made him drunk with the power it provided him, until he was defeated. By then it was strong enough to completely absorb the Transformer's body (along with three other Transformers) and form the body you see above.
