The explosion is actually a handful of flour being thrown into the air behind the model and hit with a flash with an orange gel on it to simulate a fiery blast. Β A real explosion that close to the model would have been way too dangerous.Β It's the first time I've tried the effect.Β You can see there are four different colors of flash: blue on the ground, violent on the back of the model, orange on the flour, and white on the front of the model.Β Unfortunately, I was so concerned about the flour effect that I wasn't paying enough attention to the front of the model and let her get a little dark.Β Still, I liked the results and I'm going to try it again.Β It's a little tricky to get the lighting right and I almost had it. That is an outstanding effect. Be careful with the flour. With all those minute combustibleΒ particles suspended in the air like that, they can ignite with near explosive power. I'm wondering if baby powder would give you the same effect (maybe better?) and be safer.

I'm sure baby powder would have the same effect but we wanted something cheap and biodegradable.Β Flour was both.Β There was only orange light involved, no open flame and the flour is about ten feet behind the model.Β Still, by the time it was over, after ten or so takes, she was fairly dusted. Β

If you have a hot looking model, you need a hot looking photo. Β
