Well, I would think that somewhere after 200 explosions like this would leave almost anyone no longer amused or transfixed on the event. Even you are trying to capture something more than just any ol' explosion by adding the dynamic of persons close too and unmoved by the event...or so it seems to me.
I find myself not liking the angle...because I immediately want to make it more like a cover to an action movie. You got the right elements, a dramatic event captured in a single moment, plus persons who's reactions are easily viewed as just plain cool. However, if you did make the most of the potential image I expect the recruitment board would try and snag you. Those young and easily impressionable kids right out of high school and college can be swayed by persuasive and engaging images that spark their imaginations and envy for a more exciting life away from text books. Like you said....cool guys.
(Please don't get the impression that I am putting a knock on the service...maybe the recruitment office which is easy to scrutinize...but not the service.)

To be honest this is a double exposure. Β I was setting up to shoot the detonation remotely and was testing to see if my remote shutter would reach from the bunker to where my tripod was set up. Β I just happened to test it as the guys who set up the detonation were walking back up range. Β Then I shot the explosion with a burst as we fired it. Β I was initially dismayed to see that I had zoomed in too far (we don't often get to do dets this big), but as I was looking through them it occurred to me I could combine the two shots with layers in photoshop to give the big mucky mucks up at headquarters (who are super concerned with safety and such) a heart attack. Β
I was pretty lazy with the blend too, you can tell by the dust cloud/grass pretty easily when you take a second look at it. Β But in any rate, it had the required effect on the psyche of the brass.
You are right about the angle though, and if it were possible for my "models" to be this close to a det of that size without massive lung/heart/intestinal trauma I would love to get a similar shot with a lower angle and a wider lens from closer.

Yeah. Β Good old fashioned overlay trick photography. Β I was setting up to take a picture of the det and snapped a test shot as the guys who primed in were on their way back up ranged. Β Then I took a photo of the det itself and put one on top of the other in photoshop and "erased" down. Β You can tell if you look at the dust/grass. Β I should fill in the dust at their feet, but I'm lazy.
