Description This one's for

1922 Paige Daytona

The car to invent what was eventually termed the 'mother-in-law seat' and perhaps explains why races at Daytona to this very day are all about making left-hand turns.  Was the original intent to see who could shake their passenger free first?

...Probably not.

Probably Gertrude or Bertha.

I wonder if the idea was you put a heavy person there to keep the car from rolling over? Of course this fits with the mother in law theory as they are typically thought of as larger women.

While that's a great theory (not to mention hilarious!) the real reason for the seat is as hard as this is to believe, in the early '20s when this car was made two seat roadsters and other frivolous cars were out of style.  People wanted cars with seating for all their friends.  So this was supposed to make it more practical.

As you can tell by the complete lack of local Paige dealerships these days, it wasn't successful.  Paige was eventually purchased by the Graham Brothers (turning it into Graham-Paige) which lasted into World War II.  After the war Henry J. Kaiser bought them up and formed Kaiser-Frazer, which eventually purchased Willys, discontinued the Kaiser, Frazer, and Willys cars and focused entirely on the Jeep.  They survived as an automaker until selling out to AMC in 1970.

It worked, because I laughed hard.  If I had been drinking something at the time I would've needed a new monitor.
