From the rear it looks like it might have been inspired by the DeTomaso Mangusta, but from this end I'm thinking Speed Racer

I don't know why, but I see a lot of DeTomaso Pantera in this. Perhaps crossed with a bit of Lamborghini Miura.

As noted in a previous reply, this predates the Pantera.

Ah, because that came out in 1971.

Another thing I've noticed that bears quite the striking resemblance to this is the Maserati Bora, which also came out in 1971. This thing influenced a lot of designs in the years since its launch I suppose.

You have no idea how many people I've fooled over the years showing them pics of the AMX/3.  Everyone immediately thinks it's a Ferrari (or another Italian automaker), and most think it's current or relatively recent.  Or ask 'When's it coming out?'

It's a truly timeless design.  I never thought I'd get to see one of these in person.  I'm so glad I can say I have.  I'd love it even more if I could take it home with me.   I'd settle for a 1/64 replica.  Hot Wheels did the AMX/2 concept car (which is awesome in its own right), but no one's done this one.

Sounds like that could become a running gag XD

Well, I'm hopeful. There are a lot of cars out there I'd LOVE to see in diecast form, but so few of them actually make it. I'm most hoping for my own car to be done in scale. That would be pretty cool. I'd buy that in a heartbeat. Half of one, even.

No, as stated in the comments, this is a 1969 AMX/3:

Sorry, my bad, but still it's a beautiful car. Too bad AMC didn't produce it.

The surprising thing?  What apparently killed this car wasn't AMC's precarious fiscal position, but rather the upcoming bumper regulations starting with the 1973 model year.  Can you imagine this beauty with steel girders like on...well, almost any other American car from the mid-to-late '70s?  Neither could AMC.

Detroit didn't know then how to make plastic bumpers then.

Not entirely true - look at the Corvette from 1973:

Fully compliant with the new bumper regulations.  I'm thinking it was less that it couldn't be done, and more that AMC couldn't afford to spend the money developing it for what would be a low volume car.  Looking at the shape of the bumper, that may also have presented a challenge for the tiny automaker.

This Red 1973 Corvette looks like it was winking at You.

Oh, My God Father/Cousin had bought this same Model but in Blue and He also got the Full Package,
Which included: Stock rims with stock hub caps, Aluminium Mag Wheels, Tee Top and The Side Pipe Kit.
In Fact way back then He even took Me for a ride in it after That is sat in His Parents Garage for up to 20 years
Before He did some minor restoration and started going to Corvette Car Shows.
He mostly got 2nd or 3rd place until one day a Female Corvette owner that mostly go 1st place didn't show up,
He Came in 1st on That day.

Pretty Kewl Huh?

Totally exotic and it's still got those door handles.

Yup!  The fastest way to verify this is, in fact, an AMC.  Look at the door handles!

Was it designed by De Tomaso

No, this was 100% AMC designed.  They were built, however, by Bizzarrini in Italy.

Interesting to know, it has some Pantera elements in it. Thanks

SwiftysGarage In reply to NIKON-AJ [2018-06-12 01:28:25 +0000 UTC]

Please note that the AMX/3 predates the Pantera.  So if copying was done, De Tomaso cribbed from AMC and not vice versa.
