Description The Little Mermaid Real Ending ( H.C. Andersen)

Doesn't really look like this [link]

After giving away her voice to the Witch and enduring terrible pains due to her transformation into a human, the Little Mermaid meets again her prince she saved from a shipwreck and left unconscious on the shore. They fall in love and live happily until the prince's father orders him to marry a princess. The prince asserts he won't marry anyone else but the woman who once rescued him. He mistakes her for his savior and announces their wedding, letting the Little Mermaid in great despair, condemned to be heartbroken and to be transformed into foam the morning after he marries. Her sisters try to help her, bringing a dagger to her "Before the sun rises you must plunge it into the heart of the prince; when the warm blood falls upon your feet they will grow together again, and form into a fish’s tail, and you will be once more a mermaid."

"Then she glanced at the sharp knife, and fixed her eyes on the prince, who whispered the name of his bride in his dreams. She was in his thoughts, and the knife trembled in the hand of the little mermaid: then she flung it far away from her into the waves; the water turned red where it fell, and the drops that spurted up looked like blood. She cast one more lingering, half-fainting glance at the prince, and then threw herself from the ship into the sea, and thought her body was dissolving into foam. "

She's eventually saved by the daughters of the air, spirits who help her to get an immortal soul ...

I've always wondered how the prince reacts when he realizes she's gone, and what happens with him afterward.

My favourite tale from the childhood. You managed to capture the emotions that the Little Mermaid goes through. It`s a unique recreation of the scene Congratulations!

Finally someone who refers to the original Andersen's tale! (Not that I didn't like Disney version, it's just... Well, it's probably a way more popular than the original is, although the real story is breathtaking... I mean, what about the idea of self-sacrifice and the real love - and surely she DID love him, when she choose not to kill that stupid bastard- uhm... ) Great work.

Sycil In reply to helca-k [2011-09-08 08:55:31 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Helca. I agree with you. Self sacrifice for real love is the noblest of causes, and that makes the Little Mermaid one of my favourite tale heroine. She's adventurous, passionate and true to her heart. No wonder Disney got inspired by her personnality.

Frist thing I love how she looks like a mermaid, a fish woman. Second the pain look and the screen that blocks the view for just the princes face. The cast of the shadow which holds her dagger. Mmm my favorite never did care for a happy ending rather have a noble one instead.

I personally like both versions. The Disney one because it was part of my childhood and frankly, I like a happy ending. H. C. Anderson's version tugs more at my heartstrings as an adult. I love tragedies. I particularly love that there's a silver lining for the Little Mermaid.

Opinions on the Verse aside, I love this. You've captured the emotion quite well. My heart breaks for her.

I agree with you about the Disney version. It's also part of my childhood, and it is very dear to me. I surely didn't want to discredit that rewriting of the tale. I just wanted to illustrate my vision of the original scene...and I must say I'm very proud you find it good Thank you
