The night whitebeard attacked the crew, Ismael got cocky and bold; He defied whitebeard but the old man just obliterated him, annihilating his left arm in a sec... Without Izam getting in whitebeard's way, Ismael would have died this night... his devil fruit helped him scared his wound before he lost too much blood to survive.

Ismael was not in any condition to fight, but decided anyway to stand against the marine when it showed up, to give the time to the survivors to run away. Gin, Ismael's uncle, was the officer leading the division that day. He captured Ismael and Okval and sent them to Impel Down.

But when he finally found out a way to escape from Impel down, Ismael met Blackbeard, an old friend of his father, who told him he was alive.

Ismael, Okval and Hugo managed to find Izam and the others after many months of search. At this moment, Ismael proclaimed himself captain of the crew Izam used to handle for many years, without knowing he was in the presence of the new 'Child'.

Ismael had only one goal, find his father in order become the new 'Child'. it's after one year of journey Ismael realised how foolish he's been, when he saw Izam took the soul of Zackary Owell-Zorn in front of him. This day he understood how blind he's been all those years and begged his brother to forgive him. Izam just answered him : "Ismael, you are my brother and my blood, there is nothing to forgive! everyday I thank the ancestors for bringing you back safe to us! I am the one asking for your forgiveness... Because i've never been able to rescue you my dear brother! So forgive me, please, forgive me!"

For the first time in decades, Ismael's heart warmed up. And from this day, Ismael serves his brother and Captain, Izam Lafayette.
