El Sombreron is a supernatural entity from Guatemalan folklore and can be found throughout Central America. El Sombreron is a boogeyman-like figure, though he preys primarily on teenaged and adult women rather than children. He rides into towns at night, upon a horse with hair that he braids every day. Once he spots a woman who is out alone, he will dismount and begin to follow her. As he follows, he will braid her hair, an act which she will scarcely notice. Once he is finished, the woman will finally feel his presence. To avoid being discovered, El Sombreron will tip his hat to hide his face and will begin to serenade his victim with beautiful song. If she is sufficiently entranced, El Sombreron will sprinkle soil on her, causing her to be unable to sleep or eat. After a few days, hew will come for her and take her away. If she is not entranced by him, El Sombreron will produce a razor-tipped whip and begin lashing her in his rage, stopping just short of killing her before vanishing into darkness.
