Even at the beginning, Stiles was innocent from the darkness tearing at his 'normal' life as well as the rest of the pack. Over and over Stiles experienced death, fought against it and then a Dark Fox spirit claimed dominion over his flesh. He liked the power, realizing it was forgettable. Still, it remained on the fringe. In all of this, his best friend evolved and whether Stiles acknowledged his feelings or not, Derek's presence stayed strong.
Feelings repressed returned during a bleak and lonely second, opening the door for a thousand year old void to assert its needs rather than its control.
