Houses in Ghadames were often painted, sometimes to celebrate the Hadj (the pilgrimage to Mekka which is one of the 5 Pillars of Islam).The photograph was taken before the siege the city suffered during the Arab Spring.

Thanks! Ghadames if a fantastic place, and still unspoiled by mass tourism. I too wish that Libya will come to know peace and prosperity soon. It is an amazing place, and all the people we encountered were friendly and hospitable. It's really a shame what happened to the country.
