I like the softer look tho I'm trying to avoid plastic..>.< that's hard.

Instead of a fill-in flash, I would try to use something reflective (mirror,tin-foil,50's car bumper) and bounce the natural light back on you. This would avoid wash-out.
Thank you for not putting a smelly watermark on it...they suck.

This is a fiendishly difficult exposure situation. Fill flash is about the only way to even get close to handling it.
