Description Here's a picture I drew to help promote a Kickstarter project for Ratha's Creature, which will (hopefully!) be a graphic novel based on one of my favorite books as a kid (which is also a great read for adults), by the wonderful Clare Bell.

The Kickstarter project is here: [link]

It is a fantastic project with cool incentives, so please do check it out!

The artist Seasaidh proposed a challenge to help promote the project, and you can read about the challenge here: [link]

For more art for the challenge by other artists, please see here: [link]

Note, I'm not involved with the project myself, but I love the book (and series), and I had a little time to draw while recently snowed in, so I hoped to help by drawing and spreading the word. I have been a huge fan of the Named series (Ratha's Creature, Clan Ground, etc.) since I was a kid (in the 80's!), and have been dying to do (new!) fanart, but I have very little time to draw lately. Having been snowed in recently, I had a little time to do some drawings.

---------------------

Here's how I saw Ratha in my head when I first read the books. Now, I understand her species (a sentient prehistoric big cat) looks more cheetah-like now (the author discusses it on her website, [link] ), but back in the 80's I had pictured her as a kind of puma/leopard mix, with some prehistoric sabertooth too, so that's what I drew. Here's my little homage to a fantastic character from a wonderful author of an excellent series.

Oh my gosh-- This kind of thing is what I strive for in my art. ;_; Do you have any tips for getting the head right at that angle? I've been trying for the longest time but I can never settle/be satisfied with the outcome. ;0;

Stunning work! You definitely gave it your all on detailing -- looking at those eyes -- that's a good example of keeping as close to the real thing

I love the depth and focus in her eyes. I always pictured them as large, oversized cats with cheetah-like builds, except instead of spotted coats they simply had the colors they were described as having. I never gave them saber teeth, but it's super interesting to see others with this perception of the characters.

I love this image! It's got a wonderful combo of realistic and still very expressive. Such a great look of fierce determination -- very Ratha! I've admired your art for a long time -- it's a great treat to see your impression of Ratha.

Wonderful drawing! My own mental image leaned towards that direction, too, btw.

This is wonderful, and I am honored to see it in the Challenge, where it can get the attention it deserves. Thank you again!

Beautiful work! She's lovely, and the detail work is terrific. Don't worry about whether it's a canon representation. Clare and discussed this a lot during the early stages of planning the graphic novel. Even with the graphic novel creating an official representation of sorts, we want fans to feel free to interpret Ratha according to their own imagination. There is no one right look for the Named characters. You may have seen this already, but we were inspired by this post: [link] . Ratha and the other characters mean too much to too many people, and everyone has their own vision. We wouldn't want to take that away from anyone.

Were you in the big northeast blizzard?
