Dark and striking, like something linked with the Mythos should be!    Now,if I were you I'd add alien monsters around or near it,as mi-go, snake-people or others.

I did not really understand what this monolith signified in 2001 a space odyssey.

Agree. Who then?

You are right there. The razor argument favours not assuming unnecessary entities. So harking thunder and proposing a Thor beating his anvil would be ignorant and out of the question.
However, drawing a parallel between space odyssey and Nolan's Interstellar, I suggest the monolith represents future technology sent back in time by an advanced human/alien (?) civilization to aid the dawn of mankind. Do you agree upon the sending back in time part? Because that would question the existence of future civilization in first place. And thus we go back to square one. DAMMIT!

Agree! I'm not very fond os time travel: There's not an elegant way to solve the grandfather paradox. What if the result of aiding mankind in its begginig is, for example, the discovery os interstellar travel and the destruction of the advanced alien civilization, prior to the monolith itself?
So, thay only leave us the possibility of an unknown entity, 1.- omniscient, and so, capable of foreseeing the result of its actions, or 2.- truly alien, whose actions are outside human comprehension.
The first case get closer to the traditional concept of "god"; the second one could be near the idea of a lovecraftian Old One.

(I'm afraid I haven't seen Interstellar yet... Ups! Some light spoilers there!)

This topic is open to so many interpretations.
My bad... Watch the movie. Interstellar I mean. You will love it.

Don't worry, sure I will enjoy it.
About the topic... Well, I think that's why it is so interesting: Because it cannot be solved. We humans tend to find more attractive the difficult challenges than the easier ones.

I thought it represented some Alien intelligence

Alien... could be, but intelligent... seeing what it did with those apes, I'm not sure about that

Not necessarily. This is how I look at it - the monolith provides them with the insight to use bones and sticks and stones as tools to hunt.
But they sure shat bricks at first, though.

I was just kidding!
Anyway, intelligence is not a guarantee of success... How many well-intentioned actions end up in disaster?

What I was trying to express, in a ironical way, is the philosophical reflection that I'm not sure if aiding the (more or less) peaceful apes to evolve into killers was, long-term considering, a true benefit for them...

This ussually happens to me after listening the news on the radio, you know...
