What software do you use to convert the images to HDR?

Photomatix. I think it's pretty popular. Easy to use and gives you good control. There's a basic version which is completely free; and a free trial of the pro version available here [link] .

Turns out you can also convert images to HDR in Photoshop (not sure what versions and up, I use CS3) by going: File > Automate > Merge to HDR.

Nice, I've got CS3, will give that a whirl.. But that would just be the first step right?

All this injecting colour back and stuff is greek to me

first thing i noticed, remined me of being up a high mountain road covered in clouds in Tenerife and all the land mass was just floating in the clouds
