Description
It is said that kuchisake-onna is a vengeful spirit, walking the streets with a surgical mask in front of her mouth and a hidden sharp object in her possession. When she encounters children, she will ask 'Am I beautiful?'. As she is very beautiful, it's taken that she is answered 'yes'. Then she removes the mask, uncovering a mouth that's been cut open from ear to ear. She asks again. Answer yes or no, mostly it won't help - she will hunt the person down and kill him/her. It's said that if you answer 'You look normal' or 'So-so', then it will give the person some time to escape her.

My version of this legend is mainly based on how she was depicted in the 2007 Japanese movie of the same name - of course, I've so far only seen the trailer. x)

We just learned about it in Uni, too, so that's where my interest came from. I find it absolutely fascinating.
