The Snow Queen in Spitsbergen, dressed in a bunad (Norwegian traditional costume).
Its inspired by both the original Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen and Elsa, the Snow Queen from Frozen, in honor of the recently-released Frozen 2. Got so many Snow Queens in my feed, I couldn’t resist drawing my own version.
Although most of the original fairy tale takes place in Denmark, as the heroes, Greda and Kai, are Danish, like the author, the Snow Queen (Snedronningen) herself DOES in fact live in Norway – specifically Spitsbergen – in the original. The Disney version differs significantly from Andersen’s, but her nationality/country of origin is correct.
I loved the original story as a child; I really enjoy the story Frozen tells as a story about family and about coming to terms with parts of yourself you’re embarrassed by/others don’t accept, but I relate to Greda’s spiritual journey and the sacrifices she makes even more strongly. Both Greda and Anna’s actions at the end of their respective stories had an influence on Bronia’s choice at the end of The Lonely Girl and the Lonely Warrior, although it was most strongly inspired by the ending of a female-lead version of The Tinderbox my grandma read to me that stuck with me forever and The Wild Swans, which, like Frozen, involves a girl sacrificing her life to save her siblings. Interestingly, both of these are by Andersen . . .
This Snow Queen’s bunad (Norwegian folk costume) is heavily inspired by Elsa’s – she, Anna and their mother, Queen Iduna, wear heavily stylized bunad (bunads?) for most of the movie.

The embroidery/ice pattern on their outfits is called rosemaling. I had a lot of fun with this, as it’s a bit of a cross between fileteado porteño (Argentinian folk art) and Polish folk art, both of which I’ve drawn before. Most rosemaling portrays flowers, but, since she’s a Snow Queen, I drew snowflakes with the looping pattern representing the snow or wind. I noticed that the rosemaling in Frozen differs from the real thing in that its more geometric and angular – probably because its meant to portray snow instead of leaves (Elsa does actually describe it as “frozen fractals” herself lol)
I drew a more typically traditional outfit (loose shirt, different style vest) and added some details, such as the silver clasps and buttons (traditional Norwegian silver jewelry/sølje – Anna has this in the movie) and bag (veske).
There are different types of bunad, I am not sure what sort the outfit this Snow Queen is wearing would be. I recently found out those “rosemaling traditional Norwegian dresses” had a name . . .
The crown is inspired by Norwegian wedding headdresses
I used Spitsbergen as a reference for the background and Gamlehauge Castle as a reference for her castle.
Her appearance is inspired by both Elsa and the real Norwegian Princess Mette-Marit, who is basically real-life Elsa.
