The T-80U is still in use in Cyprus (and Russia and the CIS, but of course, there it is a distant second to the T-90). The Cyprus Army still takes them out on parades and drills.

Not that odd. The M1A2 is only 2 years younger, and is the most modern common tank in the USA, and I believe the modern T-90 uses the equipment of the T-80U (the gun in particular).

I think the T-80U is more modern than any T-72 variant in the Russian Army. I could be mistaken. Tank development is slow, so a design that is 20 years old (like the T-80U) is still quite modern. The M1A2 is only 2 years younger, and is the most modern common tank in the USA.
