Er, actually... I never said it was definitely so, but I always liked the theory that these are the descendants of our mere housecats. xD You know, like in Australia where they're supposedly growing as big as leopards where there are no more dingoes.

Well, it would mean that all other cats were dead as nails. Kinda creepy.

In my headworld, I assumed the worst. I kept leopards around since they're really versatile cats, though. The surviving cats then radiated into new species, but they're not as important in my Earth's future as they were in our Earth's past anymore. ^^

Lions are 90% down in population since the 1900s, expected to go extinct in the next couple of decades; there's only a meagre handful of wild tigers left that hardly find anything to eat; leopards are dying rapidly outside of Africa and may only survive in national parks there; wild cheetahs are almost as rare as lions, highly inbred and 90% of them are fair game to hunters; snow leopards are few and far betweeen and have difficulty finding mates; jaguars suffer from habitat and prey loss and poaching; clouded leopards die off as their habitat is replaced with palm oil plantations or sacrificed for agriculture and the East-Asian governments aren't listening to expressions of concern. As for the small cats, most of them are hunted throughout their range, too. Those who prey on huntable game are going to face massive competition from humans even in remote areas as our own population explodes, and for most of the others, things don't look too bright either... :-/

Let's have a look from another point: if we manage to save enough big cats we can create a new breed from all of them. Most of the are interbreedable, although in quite an odd ways, but however is capable of giving offspring that can reproduce. Add here a bit of genetic manipulations (which in following decades will make progress) and you will get a perfectly valuable species.
Another possible candidate in future large cats is a Eurasian lynx. Has LC status. Lives in one of the least populated places in the world with enough game, far away from civilization and has enough of normal habitat. Adaptive, opportunistic, has high enough numbers. Was successfully reproduced in places where it was extinct. Doesn't have valuable fur or meat, careful although isn't afraid of humans and capable of living in suburbia.
So i think it depends and we will see.

I don't know if I agree on lynxes. In two countries, Germany and Switzerland, where they were reintroduced, hunters and protesters are busy poisoning them and shooting them secretly. Lynx are very difficult to reintroduce since they need neighboring lynxes. Earlier tries to just put them in a forest and see what they did failed. Here, the reintroduction programme has been going on since I think the seventies, and produced a whopping 20ish wild lynx in Germanan forests. XD They're afaik generally shy and try to avoid humans. Seeing one takes really good luck. I see lynx fur used a lot for accessoirs and coats, and I guess these come from Russia and China. Russia is still rich in wildlife but they don't manage it well at all (see the large wolf eradication programme).
I'm not sure about interbreeding, either. You can interbreed hybrids with parent species, but the offspring tends to be stillborn in hybrid x hybrid crossings, have genetic oddities or be sterile. And I don't quite see money going into making new cat species. Little enough goes into saving the existing ones. Even if such a novelty species were made, where to put it? What would it eat, and why would land owners accept it? I could imagine something like this for the pet industry, but atm, laws are pretty strict regarding the big cats. If you produce a liger, for example, I'm pretty sure you have a lawsuit coming your way pretty fast.
Btw, I'm not saying my scenario will be definitely right, but I think things will go pretty badly for most of the cats regardless if nothing is done.

Dear, these grey bastards run around here -in Russia- in very large numbers. We keep them at bay because otherwise they will eat all the cattle. And not that it was easy to grow it here you know. But North Ural, Siberia and North of Far East are very wast places and very underpopulated so animals are pretty much left to themselves.
Maybe in China they use lynx fur for coats but we in Russia don't do that. As i have said lynx fur is bad one and isn't good for fur coats.
Also is it a real lynx fur or just a coloured rabbit?
We will see.

Germany, where we get a single brown bear after 170 years of them being eradicated in our country and freak out like shit and make it a political issue and kill it after a few weeks despite it being strictly protected.

I hope you don't mind if I create a species inspired by yours.^^ The only similarities is they are from the furure (that is only because they were genetically created by scientists) and they are large. (more like polar-bear size) They will be called Briarwood Leapords/cats.

Hello, this has inspired me to make my own species. I would like your opinion on the name. It is a mix between a cheetah and a tiger. I thought of the Theegartah. What do you think?
