Alternative Title: 11/11 Armistice DayHappy Belated Veteran's Day everyone~!
I had this all finished and shiny last Wednesday, but alas, I did not have a scanner or a camera with which to post it until today.
This piece was inspired by my history teacher (A Vietnam veteran and just about the coolest old guy ever), who gave a huge speech to my high school on Veteran's Day.
This picture came to my mind as he read the following poem--In Flanders Fields--by John McCrae.
In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead; short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe!
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
So I decided to draw some WWI fan art. I couldn't decide at first whether to draw England leaning up against France or Canada (as McCrae was Canadian), but in the end, England won.
Take that as you may.

Oh man, when I was sketching this, it just looked like FrancexUK fluff. Then when I finished inking it, it was a tad more emo-looking, and when it was colored, it FINALLY had the depressing look that I wanted.
Nami hated me the whole time I was looking at this. XD (She hates any pairing for Iggy that's not USxUK.)

I used to listen to that poem every year on that day when I was a kid. Of course, maybe that's why every year I don't like November...
