I don't think one could It's a ball gown, not meant to everyday use. But maybe some sort of perching on the edge of the armless chair was possible... I don't know.

They sat on backless stools so that they could flip the back of the hoop over it when they sat. It's the same sort of dress that Miss Anna wears in "The King & I" musical starring Yul Brinner as the king of Siam. If you notice, she does a lot of standing up in her dress too but does manages a dainty curtsy! That said though, I love this dress even though it is impossibly impractical

Oh yes, every shot of Anna's curtsy results in beautiful spreads! And actually, she does sit down in a few scenes and there's this massive pooling effect. XDD

I suppose, however, they keep having to adjust that massive crinoline for each actress who plays Anna. Some don't fare well with the skirts and then some fare extraordinarily well, but overall I've seen mixed reactions from women wearing crinolines.

I'd say if you're going to wear a hoopskirt or crinoline for any musical/stage production you need to seek advice first. >.>
