Notes/Information

c. June 2006
Great Abaco Island, Bahamas

My fiance's grandparents live down in the Bahama's, and they have a couple of small cottages that they rent along the beach, and we were fortunate enough to go visit over the summer of 2006 (and I want to go back again!)

Judy (his grandmother) has a large collection of these. These glass balls are old-fashioned buoys that were in use through the early part of the 20th Century. They're hand-blown glass, wrapped in fishing nets. The fishing boats would through them overboard (just like buoys today) and they would mark the location of a trap or a net.

Every now and again (most commonly after a hurricane) they wash up on shore - Judy has collected over 50 of them (unfortunately, most of them were lost after a large hurricane in the 90's, but she's started finding more of them again, and has about 20 of them now, including one with holy water in it, for the maiden voyage of a fishing ship!)

Okay, enough about the history, but these may be beautiful to see in a photomanip, being held or something like that. These were the best shots I could get of this large one, and it is the most stunning shade of blue glass I've ever seen!
