Description This past week (1/23/16) we had a record snowfall here in southern Japan. Kyushu got pummeled with snow - in my town, we got about 6" (15cm), and we're not even in the mountains! It was the nice, fluffy, good for snowballs packing snow, too. During a lull in the storm, my husband and I took a walk to our local shrine. It was too cold to go anywhere further, and the roads were too treacherous to drive on, but I'm glad we got out to get some pictures.

Here is the main place where you leave donations and say your prayers, inside the little building is the shrine itself. I just love the rope on the bell, the colors really popped out against the white snow. And for anyone wondering, that's a fishing net hanging off the bottom tassel, because the shrine is for an event that happened with the river, and of course, because we're right up against the inland sea, we have a history of fishermen and the like.

The shrine bell always fascinated me. Is anybody, regardless of religion, allowed to give donations or blessings to Shinto shrines like these, or are only those who practice Shintoism allowed?

Nope, anyone. The gods of Shinto don't care - they're less "gods" and more "spirits." And the bells are at both so to and Buddhist sites, too, because for a long time, they were one in the same (called a "Kami"/God in Shinto, and a "bodhisattva" in Buddhism, but the same history or mythological figure).

Also, Shinto isn't like a religion per say, it's closer to culture than anything. Basically, if you find yourself around one, go for it. Down here, the process is usually bow before you step up, step up, toss your coins in, ring the bell, clap twice, say your prayer, and bow.
