The success of previous atmosphere-only gunships sparked an increased interest in a more versatile vehicle, capable of quickly transporting soldiers and supplies into live combat areas, both in space and planetary theaters with ease. Enter the AC-15 Hellion Gunship. Designed specifically to bring troops into dangerous situations, and provide close fire support from the air, the Hellion even has the ability to deploy specialty troops from high altitude or sub-orbital positions in flight. This allows, for example, sniper units to get into position without the dropship ever having to stop. During and after deploying the main body of troops, the Hellion's five Autocannons are placed to allow three of them to focus on the same target from virtually any angle, while the gunship hovers nearby. The Hellion is also built for boarding action, to carry troops into an enemy vessel, then deploy and cover them for as long as possible.
The standard loadout of Streaker missiles and Buster rockets can be swapped for mission-specific needs, and the wings hold 6 separate mountings each, for weapons and other equipment. Options include ECM equipment, air-to-ground explosives, anti-starship torpedoes, additional fuel tanks, cargo pods, and even high-yield warheads.
The AC-15 Hellion takes much of its design inspiration from the AC-11 Hydra, but as the name suggests, it is more than a few variations removed. The most obvious difference of course is the aerospace drive system replacing the antiquated rotary wings of the Hydra. Plans for modifications and future variations of the Hellion are of course constantly being proposed, but for the forseeable future, the popularity and success rate of the Hellion has cemented its place in the star fleet.
==========
Thanks to a number of factors, this model has taken me *ages* to finally post. These include having a lousy camera that can't take a clear photo to save its life, improving the background I shoot on and so having to retake the pictures, and then again finding the less blurry ones, then doing a minor rebuild and having to update the photos again... plus an unhealthy dose of procrastination and laziness, and here's where we end up, no less than two years later. I'm hoping that this will be the first of many models that I'll finally get around to posting in the near future!
