Description

In early prototype designs, the Devastator II class was constructed with the reactor and drive section in the stern as a separate module, more easily detachable. This was intended to make modification and large-scale maintenance easier to perform. However, due to the immense size of the ship, and the resulting stresses on the hull during even the most basic of maneuvers, this idea had to be scrapped, and the drive section was redesigned to be fully integrated into the core of the ship.

Several other sections of the ship remained modular, however. The port and starboard hangar bays are seen as priority targets by an enemy, an inescapable reality of carrier ships. So too is the large armor plate giving the ship its distinctive broad topside profile, which it can use as a shield to protect other, smaller ships from enemy fire, even after its energy shields have been disabled. Each module can be removed and replaced with relative ease, allowing the ship to spend less time in repair yards, and more time leading her fleet.
