Description This has been a personal project of mine for the last week and a bit. I finally felt in the mood to start stitching again and I really love the design of these Whalers from Dishonored, So much so that I wanted one of my own to sit upon my desk and guard my stuff for me when I'm not here.

Materials Used : Papermache, acrylic paint (for the mask) Leatherette,  cream faux suede, light brown cotton drill, white velvet, and real leather for the two belts.

The doll was completely hand sewn, stuffed with polyester allergen free stuffing and stands about 14 inches from heel to head. Hes probably the biggest of all the soft doll I've made so far.

No! I am not selling my patterns and neither will I post my patterns up publicly.

I make everything up as I go usually and the main body pattern is my own little crafting secret.

This is absolutely gorgeous! I saw it on Tumblr, but I wanted to comment here. Do you think you'll make the other whalers, like Daud or Billie or the novices? Or an Overseer? I've not quite seen anything else like this for Dishonored, and I think it's one of the best fanart pieces I've come across.

Thank you! and I may make others, the only issue is, is that I cant keep them all as I do not have room anymore.
But I'm not sure what the standing is on copyrights for selling things like this based on characters from games etc even if it is a one off, to people who might want them.
I may have to do some research, you see, I'd hate to upset a game company and creators that I have a lot of respect for and my business adviser told me to not sell my detailed dolls for less than £60 or so to cover my material and time costs...
However an Overseer might be interesting to try my hand at, I like to keep some variety and unique feel to my dolls, Billie and Novice Whalers pretty much all follow the same basic look just with different colors (But I DO love the Whalers an awful lot)
But I suppose the future is still unknown, I did enjoy making this one though and I'm glad people do like my work :3

I think it varies from company to company, depending? I know Nintendo (mainly thinking of the things I've seen sold based on Pokemon and the Legend of Zelda series) is fairly lenient and have not sent out many cease and desists as far as I'm aware. There are people on Etsy, Storenvy, and other places selling replicas of Corvo's mask, his sword, and other things found in Dishonored, and they seem alright. Other companies like Hasbro and (I believe) Ubisoft have not been so open to the sales of fanwork, sending cease and desist orders and flagging things for removal if they see them being sold. Dreamworks is also a company that will ask you to stop if they see you selling fanwork, but I don't believe they're as active as others in looking for violators. But yeah, it never hurts to do a little digging/research if you end up wanting to sell these. :U

It'd probably be cool to have a little Overseer to go with your Whaler! Masked buddies. Or enemies, really. But still cute! I especially love how the mask on this doll came out, you even got the straps drawn in there, it's great!

Yeah.
I've heard of a few artist being dragged into being sued and things for selling batches of fanwork stuff (Though mine would be probably one or two dolls only of different characters, making to much of the same thing I loose interest so fast), The only time I ever sold fanwork was when I got an offer on a Bad Batter doll I made the other year from OFF and a small yellow doll of Hoody from Marble Hornets, they were both sold to cos-players, but I only let them go as I was really really financially stranded at the time and the sales gave me the aid I needed.

But I have been considering making original to my own design dolls for a while now, but I don't know how popular anything thats not fan based is anymore. My ideas are all fairly apocalyptic or steampunk anyway, its just finding the market for it as all anyone ever seems to give two hoots about is all fan work, for example a lot of my original drawn work and characters get so ignored in favor of say, a terrible little doodle of some canon character from a game that I happened to play at some point.

I was going to make my self a wearable Whaler mask using the pattern I used for this little one, so it was a good trial run considering I eye shot everything and try and make it all up as I go along!
I might seriously consider an Overseer now, maybe try and make a little dog out of poly clay or something to go with him, I have another spare body base laying around although its much smaller than the 14 inch one that was used for Mr Whaler (I'm still undecided if this one is Thomas or not.)

Wow incredibly late reply on my part, I'm so sorry.

I've seen C+Ds handed out, but I've never witnessed anyone being sued by a large company, though I'm sure it's happened. But I've also seen a lot of fan merch sell (There's someone on Tumblr who makes adorable whale plushies styled after the ones in Dishonored, and she's gotten no flack for it) with no problems, and they've even been praised/encouraged by the company. I guess some are more comfortable with fan made merchandise, but yeah, you never no.

(Those dolls sound amazing, I used to watch Marble Hornets and follow it avidly, and OFF is on my to play list at some point in the future! I'm sorry you had to sell them, I'm sure you put a lot of time and love into making them. D: )

You'd be surprised at how well original work sells, especially with art dolls like these. If you come up with some interesting designs and promo them, people will flock to them. I've always wanted to get my hands on one, but they sell pretty fast! I find that it comes down to style and design, more than anything. Plush and dolls are different, and while fan art gets more attention overall, if you're patient and persistent, you'll gain a following that loves your original work and would be thrilled to see you follow through with it more often.

(and then to be a complete hypocrite, if you ever made a wearable Whaler mask I'd throw all my money at you not even kidding. My last mask broke and I've been searching high and low for a replacement for my cosplay. q__q)

Oh man, if you made the dog, that would be adorable. I actually love the designs of the wolfhounds in Dishonored, they're so weird and anatomically messed up, but they're cute in their own way pfffff. It'd be a crime not to have an Overseer with a little friend!
