Description Dragons and wyverns and things with wings/legs/glass eyes all look nice, but they are a pain in the butt to make. Sometimes I just want to felt and relax without it being exhausting. When that happens, I make pokemon.

Dragonair is made entirely out of colored wools, except for a wire run down her middle that makes her gently posable. She also has an apoxie sculpt horn painted in acrylics and coated in matte gel (i.e. a varnish). She's approximately 16 inches long and is super fun to pose! I like the serpentine body type. Maybe I'll do more.

Needle felting, to summarize briefly, is a technique used to create what are essentially 'wool sculptures'. There's no sewing involved; instead, by punching the raw wool thousands of times with special barbed needles, you transform it into felt, and can control the shape of the felt.

Before you ask, yes, that's a corn snake in the fourth picture. His name is Jasper. He probably wants me to stop putting pokemon in his tank.

Materials: Wool, felting needles, wire, needle nose pliers, apoxie sculpt, acrylic, matte varnish.

Dragonair and all other pokemon are copyright to Gamefreak and Nintendo. I just make things out of wool. (Gotta catch 'em all, Pokemon!)

I'm planning to make a needle felted snake and it needs to be bent. Where did you get your wire?

I got it at ACMoore, a craft store, though you can get similar stuff at other places--such as at a hardware store, or a florist (floral wire). I use either aluminum or steel depending on what I'm making.

Thanks
Could you also tell me how you made it? I cant find anythig on the internet. Im planning on needle felting a snake and yours looks the closest thing to one hehe sorry for bothering you so much!

No problem! There's lots of tutorials on the internet on how to needle felt that can explain the basic technique better than I can, but if you already know that, then really the trick to making a snake is to get a wire, and wrap the wool TIGHTLY around the wire, then felt it down. Also, make sure there's a loop at each end of the wire and you felt some wool through the loop--if you just leave the wire as a sharp point, it'll eventually poke through the wool!

This is so cute! Must be fun posing it :>.
does the wool not frey or split apart when you pose it? And is there any sort of armature holding up the ears/fins?

tallydragon In reply to Xx-ArtyAmy-xX [2012-11-09 16:36:19 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Not really, I felt very densely so by the time it's done, it's really, in essence, a solid piece of felt just like fabric felt--if you were rough with it or tried to over-contort it it may split, but regular posing is fine. And nope, the ears hold themselves up.

It'll depend on how the next couple of months go...at the moment I'm out of the country with no felting supplies! ^_^; Whenever I have a long stretch at home I start felting again.

Lol after reading the comment about him being perplexed, that's exactly what I thought. "Wtf you weren't here a minute ag--- oh, thanks.... for snapping the picture while I wasn't ready." Hah. Snakes amuse me. I've raised several, and my ball python, Cash, had Hannibal on his handcart in his tank for a while. Until he hugged him to oblivion. >.>

Anyway, to compliment the needle felting, this is amazing and I adore it. I admire crafts like this, because I do not have the patience to do so. This is an adorable creation.

How would you get the wire in? Would you stab the wool around it, or push it in?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

tallydragon In reply to Foxwhisper [2010-11-30 09:29:27 +0000 UTC]

I build wool up around the wire--it actually works very nicely for long cylindrical critters like this one, since I can just wrap wool very tightly around a wire, and then go at it with the needle until its solid.
