Well.... the race started out alright. Gruelling of course, but not to the
point where it could be called miserable. So long as one tried to ignore
the heat... which was incredible.

But... the day soon turned. Just as midday had arrived, the horizon began
to show a red tinge.... and tht red tinge grew into a wall. And that wall grey
into an impossible 'cliff'.

Talon just barely had enough time to whisk the tack off Catalpa, tuck her back
against a cactus... tree.... thing... and cover the mare's muzzle and eyes with
cloth ripped from the scarf 'round her neck, and take cover herself, using the heavy
saddleblanket as a shield, before the wall of wind hit, and hit hard. A sandblaster
could do no better than that storm.... thankfully, the tree killed most of the deadly
wind, but not.... all. Poor Catalpa's rumb was rubbed slightly raw from the sand, as
were part's of Talon's arms.

But... they survived.

And, when the storm died, they were off again.
