He had set out early in order to beat the sun and the midday heat. The usual temperatures of the gorge were often pleasant on days of relaxation, but when there was work to be done there was no worse time than when the sun left no shade to be heard of. Although the sun still crouched on the horizon, leaving the gorge shrouded in darkness, he still kept close to the rocky walls hearing Kindlestar padding along quietly behind him.

It wasn't out of fear or precaution that he did so, but experience. There was never anything out in the open and he knew that, so why bother? It was close to the walls where the shadows clung that any plants would dare to grow if any. Leaf-fall was beginning to set in and he needed to collect as much as he could before everything died when the cold would come and turn the already hard ground unbreakable.

Rounding a bend in the gorge and bounding over a rock he was about to pass it right up when the sun cracked an eye over the rim of the gorge and sent a ray of light to illuminate it, causing the dew that clung to it to light up brilliantly. Russetfur turned his head and felt his whiskers lean forward with joy. Cobwebs!
