Why is she trying to keep the pearl under her hands?

Here is one of my ideas for why she is holding the pearl like this:
One day, a few years after marrying Prince Eric, Ariel is wandering around underwater (she was probably going to see Triton or something). She spots a gleaming pearl in the distance, and carefully swims close.
All of a sudden, when Ariel reaches to pick this mysterious pearl up, it emits a bright flash. Ariel is surprised, and tries to shield herself from the flash, but something even more shocking happens. Ariel's tail splits apart into eight tentacles, and it extends up to her chest. You see, Ursula created this special pearl so that whoever was unlucky enough to contact it would become her successor in witchcraft. Ariel's mind was similarily warped, and she was now a wicked sea-witch! How will she ever become her normal self again?
