As an Australian I love, but am not completely familiar with 50's US car designs. Part of what I love about that era is the completely non-practical excess - but holy god, this looks like something out of Amazing Stories or The Jetsons. I suppose you could just use them as early reverse-parking sensors. If they smash, you know you're within a foot of something.
