Description

Velite (light counter-archer)

Velites are counter-archers available to the Romans in the Classical Age that provide good support for the Hastati. Though they have mediocre HP and armor, they are faster and cheaper than the Auxilia and can act as scouts if the starting Courrier is killed. Regardless, they will become obsolete once you reach the Heroic Age but can still come handy if you are short on resources. They also have a unique bonus against War Elephants.

***

Velites (also known as Skirmishers) were among the poorest soldiers and could only afford limited armor if any. They often carried light javelins that they would throw in mass at the enemy while standing at the front of the army. After making their move, the velites would retreat behind the Hastati. They were often depicted wearing a wolf pelt and thanks to their high mobility and intimidating battle tactic, they were remarkably effective against elephant charges.
