I´ve seen them twice so far, too.
Hm, too bad, why did they let you wait there? Pyroeffects or something like that?

Well, of course it´s annoying and I´d be pretty happy being allowed to shoot from the crowd at some gigs for the entire gig.
At the small ones this is possible without a problem, but I have quite a few venues near here, that are really strict about that wonderful
rule. At some gig the security guys even ran around in the audience and took away batteries and the like from ppl, who didn´t
respect that rule. Yep, that´s the point where you wonder why you applied for a photopass.
That´s even more annoying at venues, where they aren´t that strict about cams, maybe only about the press people and the "normal" audience
is allowed to take pics for the whole gig. Which leads to quite acceptable results...since nowadays cams aren´t that bad anymore.
So that sometimes leads to a point, where you wonder, why you applied for a photopass instead of simply bringing a bit smaller cam and fighting your way to the front.
BUT from the normal concert visitors point of view, I can understand that rule...
first of all the photopit is not a photopit, but a security pit and at some concerts more and more crowdsurfers crash into that pit after a while.
So it´s just good, when you´re out of "danger zone" pretty fast. (well, then there´s of course that question again, why no photographing from the audience?).
Well, and when you´ve paid a load of money it can be quite annoying if there´s some photographer jumping around in front of you all the time.
I mean, I try to not get into the way of others as much as I can, but not all photographers do that and I myself was sometimes pretty annoyed, when seeing
how rude some photographers showelled their way to the front after coming out of the pit. (if there´s no pit you of course have to get closer for a while...but else).
Haha and I even once heard that this rule is, because musicians look still fresh during the first songs and thus they prefer the pics being taken then.
There are so many nice stories about the start of that rule.
Next problem with that rule is...that the energy of a gig increases, so it´s most likely you´d get some damn great shots during song number 6 or so e.g.
That´s something that pretty often annoys me, when I´m standing there, having been forced to put my cam in the bag and then I´m like
"Aaargh, THAT would´ve been THE pic!". I guess you know what I mean.
It´s of course not impossible getting THE shot during those first three songs, but it´s simply a great feeling when you know you can take
pics during the complete gig, you don´t just point and shoot but can "think" more about the pic.
Ya...concert photography is hard from time to time but in the end it´s also the reason that makes it so challenging and thus interesting.
We´re addicted, we love it and couldn´t live without our cam, no matter what, no?!
Haha, oh my...now I´ve written way more than I wanted to..but well... (well, you can hide it, if it´s too much, haha).

Oh yes, I once had a quarrel with a security guy about that, too. Well, in contrast to quite a lot of photographers I was really there for the band and not only for the photography stuff, so in the end he allowed me to stay. (too kind, ).
Yes, the quality is higher and still not SLR like, but still. Depending on were you are, AND if you´re able to use the small cam properly you can still get some good results, which makes it so annoying that those ppl can take pics during the complete gig.
Hehe, you´re right, I joined (my firstname is not that common, so people always seem to recognize me, haha)! The only German so far I guess, hehe. I already uploaded some stuff from Tuska 2007 and Rock Hard 2008.
