Actually he wasn't surprisingly. I actually had a dream of this character which spawned the creation of the story and his design looked very similar to this (minus the hairstyle which was a lot different in my dream).
But I love Ferngully a lot so I'm not going to doubt I was subconsciously inspired by it.
