Description Taken on the way home from camping. We saw these five buildings and almost didn't stop... but it was irrisistable.
I've got three of the (almost) same shot, and can't decided between them, so I'm posting two.

Enjoy!

Very nice shot, I like this one the best because the light spot in the dramatic sky lines up perfectly with the houses. It helps focus my attention to that area of the composition, nice work.

Yeah, as much as I complain about the ugly prarie... it really does have its beauty. You just have to shoot it right.

We were driving back to Calgary from Edmonton...probably just before Red Deer when the conditions were just right...well I shot them from a moving porsche hehe...but I have done movement shots before...and probably shot a whole roll...so we shall see about the results...thanks for reminding me through your shot of that roll I have kicking around. Cheers

I did - it was my 16th birthday present from a friend - I got to drive his sexy car. I'm sure he was far more nervous then I.

lwheat [2005-07-14 00:42:49 +0000 UTC]

i love the mood and the atmosphere of the shot.

i think this one works better than the other one, because the clouds act as a nice frame for the buildings.

i would, however, crop it quite a bit. i feel the negative space on the left and top is excessive. i would crop it down 1/3 from the top, and 1/3 from the left.

also, maybe a quick contrast adjustment (via curves) would help pull some more of the grand effects of the clouds.

magnificent shot.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TaraTrigg In reply to lwheat [2005-07-14 01:05:03 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! (Truely, you actually had something useful to say!)

I kind of like the negative space, as it adds perspective to the shot... but that's just my opinion.
I've never photoshopped anything, and thus don't know what you mean by curves, but I do know what you mean by a contrast adjustment, and I can see how it would help.

It doesn't help that this is such a horrible scan, now does it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lwheat In reply to TaraTrigg [2005-07-15 02:40:37 +0000 UTC]

think of photoshopping for contrast as pushing or pulling after you've developed.

the scan is fine for web based stuff. (i'm yet to find a decent scanner in melbourne)

with regards to use - i feel it is important to "critique" not just say "great shot", provide each other with something to work on, or a different mind to look at the image.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TaraTrigg In reply to lwheat [2005-07-15 07:10:12 +0000 UTC]

Excellent. I've got a full blown copy of photoshop lined up, but at the moment I've no such software.

And yes, I do believe that giving proper critiques is important - and when I can't really critique it, I go in to detail about why I like the piece.

Sweet shot

Might be an idea to run a noise filter over it like [link] (Neat Image) and saving it at higher quality though.

Well done!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TaraTrigg In reply to digitalee [2005-07-13 08:09:43 +0000 UTC]

Indeed - my scanner is in the process of crapping out, and I didn't notice how bad it was until I saw it on a different monitor. I think I'll try a rescan, and, as suggested, saving at higher quality. The scan really doesn't do the print justice!

And thanks, I'll take a look at that filter! (Also thanks for the nice words )

digitalee In reply to TaraTrigg [2005-07-13 13:07:00 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh the woes of a terrible scanner. I not long ago bought a canoscan 8400f, which is much better than the horrible thing previously owned, but still has its issues--poor colour, poor sharpness although the latter seems to be less apparent with b&w film than e6 for some reason.

Neat Image is very much worth a look, amazing how well it works.

Good luck!

Poor colour, that's the one that annoys me most. My blue skies are never as vibrant once they're scanned...

And thanks again!

Out of the two you posted I like this one best, The lighting seems to more bold and the outline of the buildings seems to have a lot more depth. Are you going to post the third image in your scraps? As some others have said your making wonderful improvements in your skills.

It's hard to decide which of the two shots I like the most but I'd have to go with this one, although there are elements from both that are wonderful. With this one the buildings are perfect, I like that they have a lot of detail and still hold that high contrast against the sky. I feel however that the sky in the other image is more powerful, so it was hard choosing this one as the favourite even though in reality they are both highly deserving, as would the 3rd be if posted. Restraint though is a good thing. Great work mate.
