Description
Hell is made up of nine layers. Each layer is a step deeper inside a huge inverted mountain. Avernus the Blasted is the first and largest layer, and the most often visited. Below it sits Dis, the Burning City, where the iron walls scald bare skin. Below that is Minauros the Sinking, a vast empty swampland with but one city which must be constantly built because it is always sinking into the muck. Below Minauros is Phlegethos, the layer most people think of when they see the word Hell. This is the burning land, where everything is flame, flame, flame everywhere. Below Phlegethos lies Stygia, the rumored source of the river Styx, a layer of frozen land. Stygia is followed by Maladomini and Malbolge, layers of politics (what the baatezu are best at) and ruin. After that, there's Cania, even more fully frozen than Stygia, where the ice only ends in one place, where hundreds of fiends guard the portal into the lowest, darkest, smallest and yet most important of the layers of Baator called Nessus.
