Image features a Dog playing with a Horse.

You will notice that the dog's ears are "turned around". I once saw this on a mask and asked the carver why the ears were turned around om his mask. He said that small discrepancies like that are from a number of details that- when changed- could add to the character of the mask, or have some ulterior meaning. He used the flipped ears to signify "floppy ears" on dogs to differ form wolves. I asked if that was a particular symbol, or can be used by other people. He said that it wasn't so I was free to use it if I wanted.
I thanked him very much and here was one of the first times I have implemented the flipped ears.

You will also notice the lack of other animals on the dog. While cultures/Bands differ in stories and concepts, when I was taught about the dog, I was taught that the reason wolves and other animals disliked the dog was because it betrayed the animals when they came to an agreement on how to distance themselves from man. Dog sulked out of the gathering to warn man of what they were doing. The animals shunned the dog, and cursed him to go back and forever grovel for scraps at man's feet.
Since, dogs are not illustrated with interior animals, and only half breeds were the exception (there were also a handful of other exceptions, but I won't list them here now).

I also wanted to keep the "Sky Dog"s main as spectacular as some of the stories describe it. When not called "Ponies", one of the multiple names for "horse" is "Elks with straw hair and tails".

Tlingit and Haida! Two in one, and all the best. Hopefully, both sides have put asides their differences from long past and live peacefully!
I'm glad that this picture reminds you of home. I'm not so glad that it makes you miss it- homesickness sucks!

XD
Well, they have yanno, squabbles, but, nothing serious.
Most of them are all related now anyway and someone's related to someone's cousin who is married to so-and-so XD;
So it wouldn't make sense to fight.
The Tlingits do still tend to tease the Haidas and such though XD;;;

Like my best friend's dad always was like "You know why they're called Haidas? 'Cause when the Tlingits came around they were all like "'Hide us! Hide us!'"

*shakes head* XD;

LOL! OMG, that is a priceless joke! but if anything, even the Local Anishinabeh always preferred humor as a way to end disputes (including some friendly competitions). I'm glad those disputes are past. Your best friend's dad sounds awesome!

From the peoples themselves. I am in constant contact and learning with the communtiy.
Also, they prefer to be called "Native American" or by their nation's name. Not "Indian".

To me, the upturned ears of the dog carry the meaning of friendliness and openness. I was taught as a child that angry dogs have them pressed against their skull, whereas dogs wanting to play have them perked up attentively, often added to a tilted head and the proverbial liquid 'uppy dog glance'.

That's how I recognized that the dog in your picture is playing with the pony, not attacking it.

My BIL has a pony that lives in a stable nearby. There's a dog living close by and she loves running around between the horses' feet, weaving in and out of their legs, during which the horses patiently stand and wait until she's finished with her antics. You could almost imagine them rolling their eyes in a good-natured way.

This picture might be a scene taken from that scenario. It's beautiful!

Aaah ...

Having grown up in Europe I unfortunately don't have much experience with tribal art and traditions, so the concept that little details like upturned ears are markings of a certain cultural influence has so far been uncharted territory for me. Hence, my ignorance ^__^ , but I love reading these interesting little tidbits you keep adding to your comments anyway.

Here in Europe, mythology has it that dogs are considered fortunate to be allowed to be living with humans. There are several stories about how this cohabitation came to pass, but almost all tales count the domestication of canines as reward :/ - which, considering how many dogs are being treated, may or may not be debatable.

tarkheki In reply to allegroassai [2008-05-08 17:13:09 +0000 UTC]

Well, the upturned ears comment of mine was a cultural one- not a biological one. Even when drawing "angry" wolves, in traditional West Coast art, the ears are always on display pointed upwards, not laid back.
I appreciate the comment though- as I love hearing how little stories and scenarios come to mind when viewing my art! It's great to see people connecting to it.
