Sunflower is the name of a plant. The sunflower's scientific name is Helianthus annus, whose meaning is “sun flower”. It is a plant originating in North America and has the particularity of being heliotropic, that is, it rotates the stem positioning the flower in the direction of the sun during the ripening phase. When the stem of the plant stops growing, the sunflower is stopped towards to the east until he died.

Greek mythology presents a legend that explains the appearance of the sunflower flower. Clítia ou Clície was a nymph who was in love with Hélio, the sun god. When the latter changed it for Leucoteia, Clície began to weaken. She sat on the cold floor, eating and drinking, eating only her own tears.

While the sun was in the sky, Clície did not look away from him for even a second, but during the night her face turned to the ground, and then continued to cry.
