While this is a great piece of art, er, hate to say it but Mars never dominates Venus, it is always the other way around (art student, sorry.) The Romans and subsequently the Renaissance Italians liked the poetic beauty of Love being the only thing that could conquer war. It is a very cool piece though.

I know it seems so, by looking at the drawing
However in the description there's a quote from "De rerum natura" by the latin poet Lucretius
(lines 32-37)
"[...] quoniam belli fera moenera Mavors
armipotens regit, in gremium qui saepe tuum se
reiicit aeterno devictus vulnere amoris,
atque ita suspiciens tereti cervice reposta 35
pascit amore avidos inhians in te, dea, visus
eque tuo pendet resupini spiritus ore".
I only found an ancient english translation, I'm sorry!
"Since he who rules
The savage works of battle, puissant Mars,
How often to thy [it's referred to Venus] bosom flings his strength
O'ermastered by the eternal wound of love-
And there, with eyes and full throat backward thrown,
Gazing, my Goddess, open-mouthed at thee,
Pastures on love his greedy sight, his breath

In these lines Mars is pictured as the one who's been won (by Venus)
The title itself means "eternal wound of love".
