Annabelle wanted to do something special for her husband, Jake, on their tenth anniversary. She knew he had a fascination with mermaids ever since he was a kid, and she thought it would be fun to surprise him by becoming one for the night. She had found a spell online that claimed to transform anyone into a mermaid of their choice, with a simple incantation and a few ingredients. She was skeptical, but she decided to give it a try.

She got home early from work, and gathered the items she needed for the spell: a bowl of seawater, a strand of her hair, a pearl necklace, and a picture of the mermaid she wanted to look like. She chose a silver, salmon-like mermaid with a matching top, thinking it would suit her complexion and hair color. She placed the items on the coffee table in the living room, and recited the words of the spell.

As soon as she finished, she felt a tingling sensation in her legs, and watched in awe as they fused together and turned into a long, scaly tail. She gasped as her clothes changed shape, and became a matching silver scaled top. She touched her face, and felt that it was still the same. She looked at herself in the mirror, and smiled. She was a beautiful mermaid!

She quickly moved to the couch, and laid down, covering herself with a blanket. She waited for Jake to come home, feeling excited and nervous. She wondered how he would react, and hoped he would like her new look.

Jake came home around six, and opened the door. He smelled something fishy, and frowned. He walked into the living room, and saw Annabelle on the couch, with a blanket over her. He smiled, and walked over to her.

"Hey, babe, happy anniversary!" he said, and kissed her on the cheek. "What are you doing under there?"

Annabelle pulled the blanket off, and revealed her mermaid form. She smiled, and said, "Surprise!"

Jake's eyes widened, and he stumbled back. He stared at her, speechless. He blinked, and rubbed his eyes, thinking he was hallucinating. He pinched himself, and felt the pain. He realized it was real.

"Annabelle, what...how...why?" he stammered.

Annabelle explained to him how she had found the spell, and why she had done it. She told him she wanted to make him happy, and that she thought he would like to see her as a mermaid. She asked him if he liked it.

Jake was still in shock, but he tried to compose himself. He looked at her, and saw that she was still his wife, just with a different body. He saw the love in her eyes, and felt it in his heart. He smiled, and said, "You look amazing, Annabelle. You're the most beautiful mermaid I've ever seen. Thank you for doing this for me. I love you."

He leaned in, and kissed her. Annabelle kissed him back, but felt something was wrong. She didn't feel the same spark as before, the same passion and desire. She felt nothing. She pulled away, and looked at him, confused.

"Jake, I...I don't feel anything," she said.

Jake looked at her, puzzled. He asked her what she meant.

Annabelle tried to explain, but she didn't understand it herself. She said, "I don't know, Jake. I still love you, but I don't feel any attraction to you. I don't feel any chemistry. It's like...it's like we're just friends."

Jake was hurt, and confused. He asked her why that was.

She said, "The spell said that it would transform me into a mermaid of my choice, but it also said that it would make me adopt some of their traits and behaviors. Maybe...maybe because I chose a salmon-like mermaid, I inherited their mating habits."

Jake nodded, and said, "Yeah, what about it?"

Annabelle said, "Maybe that's why I don't feel anything for you. Maybe I'm programmed to not have physical intimacy with a mate. Maybe I'm not meant to have a lasting relationship. Maybe I'm not compatible with you anymore."

Jake was stunned, and saddened. He said, "That's horrible, Annabelle. That's not fair. You can't just lose your feelings for me like that. You can't just throw away our marriage like that. There has to be a way to fix this."

Annabelle said, "The spell said it would wear off in the morning. I'll feel normal again. I'll feel the same way I did before."

Jake said, "I hope so, Annabelle. I hope so. Because I don't want to lose you. I don't want to live without you. You're my wife, and I love you. Mermaid or not."

Annabelle said, "I love you too, Jake. I'm sorry for doing this to you. I'm sorry for ruining our anniversary. I thought it would be fun, but it turned out to be a disaster."

Jake said, "It's okay, Annabelle. It's not your fault. You didn't know this would happen. You were just trying to make me happy. And doing this for me is an expression of love in its own right. You still look beautiful. You still are beautiful."

They hugged, and decided to spend the evening talking as friends, waiting for the spell to wear off. They hoped that by the next morning, everything would be back to normal, and they could celebrate their anniversary properly.
