Okay so yeah those "Tanith Pipes" are pretty much bagpipes? I always wondered, but I couldn't think of anything else to have them as. ANd what do you mean other "Highlanders"? Are they a particular ethnicity or something?

The Tanith Pipes are bagpipes, yes. Why should an instrument vanish over the years, especially one with such a clear and loud sound? According to the background from the very first book the pipes are played to lead strangers on the world to safety, they just had to follow the sound.

And there are just other Highlander-Regiments in the 40k-universe, would be odd, again, if an entire culture vanishes, eh? One even has a background: [link] Others are mentioned here and there, Victoria Lamb has build some Highlanders...

Way too much reference with really existing stuff, I prefer more original concepts neither the combination of various things.
