Description
The music in the club overlooking the east river was blaring as bodies danced on the floor. Other patrons graced the bar and the lounge. Men and women mingled. On the floor, Toni spins while surrounded by her friends, Brianna - in a turquoise top and white pants- and Rosie- in a striped top and black skirt.Alphonso sits at the bar for the tenth Minute since Toni left him alone. He watches Toni disappear and reappear again behind the bodies of her friends around her. Eyes locked on Toni, He throws his drink down his throat and slams the glass on the counter and stands to his feet. He tugs at his jacket and steps towards the crowded dance floor.
On The dance floor Toni sways with her eyes closed. Rosie turns.
Rosie: Here he comes... Six o'clock high.
Brianna: I was wondering when he'd get lonely. Took the guy long enough. You okay Toni?
Toni: (Still dancing.) Uh-Hun. Why wouldn't I be?
Rosie: Well, you don't mind if we have some fun, do you?
Toni: Tag. You're it.
Alphonso swims through the crowed to where Rosie and Brianna are dancing. He looks around. Toni's gone. A look of dismay covers his face. Rosie and Brianna turn to him.
Rosie: Lookin' for sumthing, sweetie?
Alphonso: Actually, I was looking for your friend...
Brianna: (looks around) Oh, dear. We seem to have lost her.
Rosie: Seems so.
Brianna: But we found you!
Brianna grabs Alphonso and pulls him to her. Rosie grabs him from behind and grinds him.
Alphonso: Whoa! Hey! I...
Rosie: What's wrong, baby? Too much woman for ya?
Brianna: (Grinding) Maybe he's not the man we thought he might have been...
Alphonso,stuck between the two aggressive women, looks across the room towards the bar. Toni stands, stirring a drink, a smile across her face. She takes a sip as Alphonso stares in disbelief.
Alphonso: (to himself) ...You little...
Toni tilts her head up and places a tooth-picked cherry between her lips.
Alphonso smiles and begins to sway with the two women.
Brianna: uh-oh... Here we go now...
Rosie: (arms wrapped around his waist) That's the way.
Toni lifts her left hand and stares at her ring finger. She frowns. With a sigh she nibbles the cherry and downs the remainder of the beverage. Her cheeks get flushed red as the warmth of the alcohol spreads over her. She reaches for her zipper...
Alphonso: So you guys do this often? Hijacking a man on the dance floor?
Rosie: I have no idea what you're talking about. We're just enjoying a dance with a stranger.
Alphonso: Fair enough.
Toni: May I cut in?
Alphonso's heart skips a beat. Standing beside him was Toni in her newly adjusted outfit.
Brianna: (smiles) He's all yours.
The girls step away. Toni steps forward.
Toni: You're persistent.
Alphonso: You're evasive.
Toni: I had to be. (looks up at him) ...But I'm not running anymore.
Alphonso: I'm glad to hear that. Mind a dance? Unless that ring is keeping you from having a good time.
Toni: As long as you don't remind me. It won't be a problem.
Alphonso smiles. As Rosie and Brianna look on from a distance, the two sway together to the music.
